Quicksilver Messenger Service - Mona

Quicksilver Messenger Service was een psychedelische muziekgroep, opgericht door Dino Valente (artiestennaam van Chet Powers). De andere leden waren John Cipollina, Jim Murray, David Freiberg, Greg Elmore en Gary Duncan.
Hoewel Quicksilver Messenger Service al snel in de problemen kwam door vermeend bezit van drugs begon de groep in 1965 aan een tour langs de westkust van de Verenigde Staten. In 1967 kwam hun eerste contact met de platenmaatschappij Capitol Records tot stand en werden de platen Quicksilver Messenger Service en Happy Trails uitgebracht. Murray en Duncan hadden de band toen al verlaten en Nicky Hopkins was toegetreden tot Quicksilver Messenger Service.

Deze opname komt van een concert op het Sonoma State College in April 1970.
Niet in beeld is pianist Nicky Hopkins die later een vast bandlid zou worden.
Mooi tijdsbeeld van die vreemde ,maar mooie jaren 60/70.Een van de eerste ,,Jam,,bands samen met Bluesproject die later veel navolging zou krijgen met groepen als Grateful dead en Allman Brothers.



Het opstappen en toetreden van bandleden werd zo'n beetje het handelsmerk van de groep en hij viel uiteen. In 1975 en 1986 werden pogingen ondernomen om de groep nieuw leven in te blazen, maar echt succesvol waren die pogingen niet.

Quicksilver Messenger Service maakte vooral muziek die recht toe en recht aan was, als begeleiding van teksten die recht uit het hart kwamen. Bij optredens lag het accent veel op improvisatie en experimenten. Het bekendste werk van de groep is ongetwijfeld Happy Trails uit 1969, een elpee die in de muziekgeschiedenisboeken is terechtgekomen als "the finest live album ever recorded". Ruim de helft van deze plaat, zeven nummers, is gewijd aan een QMS-versie van de Bo Diddley-klassieker Who Do You Love? De gitaren van Cipollina en Duncan en het publiek van Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium proberen elkaar op deze legendarische opname te overtreffen met varianten op de typische Bo Diddley-riff.

Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love (Glen Cambell Goodtime Hour- 1968)

   The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour is an American network television music and comedy variety show hosted by singer Glen Campbell from January 1969 through June 1972 on CBS. He was offered the show after he hosted a 1968 summer replacement for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

"Sunshine of Your Love" is a 1967 song by the British rock band Cream. With elements of hard rock, psychedelia, and pop, it is one of Cream's best-known and most popular songs. Cream bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce based it on a distinctive bass riff or repeated musical phrase he developed after attending a Jimi Hendrix concert. Guitarist Eric Clapton and lyricist Pete Brown later contributed to the song. Recording engineer Tom Dowd suggested the rhythm arrangement in which drummer Ginger Baker plays a distinctive tom-tom drum rhythm, although Baker has claimed it was his idea.

The song was included on Cream's second album Disraeli Gears in November 1967, which was a best seller. Atco Records, the group's American label, was initially unsure of the song's potential. After recommendations by other label-affiliated artists, it released an edited single version in January 1968 (or possibly December 1967).^[a] The song became Cream's first and highest charting American single and one of the most popular singles of 1968. In September 1968, it became a modest chart hit after being released in the UK.
Cream performed "Sunshine of Your Love" regularly in concert and several live recordings have been issued, including on the Royal Albert Hall London May 2-3-5-6, 2005 reunion album and video. Hendrix performed faster instrumental versions of the song, which he often dedicated to Cream. Several rock journals have placed the song on their greatest song lists, such as Rolling Stone, Q magazine, and VH1. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included it on its list of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll".(Wikipedia)

 Carl Lee Perkins (April 9, 1932 – January 19, 1998) was an American singer-songwriter who recorded most notably at the Sun Studio, in Memphis, beginning in 1954. Amongst his best-known songs are "Blue Suede Shoes", "Matchbox" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby".

Most of the artists on this tribute to Sam Phillips's legendary Memphis label have chosen to cover the rockabilly hits. It isn't until a genuine Sun rockabilly artist--the late Carl Perkins--makes an appearance, joining Van Morrison for Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World," that things briefly get bluesy. Instead, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Tom Petty, and Bryan Ferry all offer up loving, note-for-note recreations of early Elvis tunes, even if it was Jerry Lee Lewis, not Elvis, who recorded a cover of "Don't Be Cruel" (Ferry's tune) for Sun.
But Elton John and Mandy Barnett both do The Killer (Lewis) proud here, as Sheryl Crow later does for Charlie Rich, and Led Zep's Page & Plant do for Sonny Burgess. Especially marvelous is Bob Dylan's subtle and, at times, hilarious take on Warren Smith's "Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache." It's a career highlight and every bit as enchanting as Robert Gordon's '70s cover version. Like the label itself, there are more hits than misses here. --Bill Holdship

The Beatles - Melbourne 15/16/17 Juni 1964

On Sunday June 14th 1964 the Beatles arrived in Melbourne for a 3 night concert engagement at Festival Hall with 2 shows each night. 

 There were chaotic scenes outside the Southern Cross Hotel (on the corner of Bourke and Exhibition Streets) when the Beatles appeared on the balcony just above street level. Exhibition Street was blocked by an estimated 20,000 screaming fans. (Only Melbourne)

About 45,000 people saw the six performances, and the last show was taped for television by Channel 9 and broadcast in Australia on 1st July from 7:30 to 8:30. Brian Epstein had originally agreed to 10 minutes being broadcast, but after he had seen a preview he was so pleased with it he allowed 22 minutes (the rest of the broadcast was made up with Australian music acts).

The performances included, "I Saw Her Standing There", "You Can't Do That", "All My Loving", "She Loves You", "Till There Was You", Roll Over Beethoven", Can't Buy Me Love", Twist And Shout" and "Long Tall Sally".

Inside the hotel the Beatles were reunited with Ringo who had flown in with Brian Epstein that morning. Jimmy Nicol packed his bag and left the next day.

Also, an E.M.I. reception was held at the Southern Cross Hotel the following day and John Lennon flew into a rage when he saw the altered Australian cover for the "With The Beatles" album.

 Australian entrepreneur Kenn Brodziak had booked the group 12 months earlier, just before the eruption of Beatlemania, for an unbelievable £2500 ($5000) per week.

 During Long Tall Sally a young audience member, Brent McCausland, leapt up on the stage and shook Lennon’s hand.

 But it wasn’t all short shows and screaming girls. On the afternoon of the Beatles’ last day in Melbourne, George Harrison borrowed a red MG and drove through the eastern suburbs along Whitehorse Rd — Box Hill, Blackburn, Mitcham and Ringwood — and up the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road to Olinda stopping at the Kenloch tea rooms for a sandwich. Een op het eerste gezicht een wat vreemde combinatie,Led Zeppelin zanger Robert Plant en het Amerikaans bluegrass fenomeen Alison Krauss.Het contact tussen Plant en Krauss werd al een jaar of zeven geleden gelegd, maar ze zongen voor het eerst samen op een tribute-concert ter ere van Leadbelly in 2004. Daarna duurde het nog even voor ze de tijd vonden om samen de studio in te gaan. De productie van Raising Sand is gedaan door T-Bone Burnett, die ook het materiaal koos in samenwerking met Krauss en Plant. De de twee stemmen passen wonderbaarlijk goed bij elkaar ,en uiteraard volgt er dan een bijbehorende tournee.

Natuurlijk was er een bezoek aan het prachtige BBC programma ,,Later,, met presentator Jools Holland waarvan hier een paar fragmenten.

Alweer mijn derde NY concert in 4 jaar,ZiggoDome .Lokerse Feesten en wederom ZiggoDome.De vorige keren met Crazy Horse,deze keer met de jonge honden van Promise Of The Real met o.a Lucas en Micah Nelson ,inderdaad ,de zonen van.Het zou een gedenkwaardige avond worden.In 2001 zag ik hem in Ahoy met een optreden van zo,n twee en een half uur.Deze keer drie en een half uur met een korte onderbreking.Een formidabel optreden met wat mij betreft een droom setlist!
Met behulp van vele geduldige filmers deze mooie samenvatting .Alsnog bedankt!!

                  Willy DeVille (born William Paul Borsey Jr., August 25, 1950 – August 6, 2009)

 In 1992 deed Willy DeVille zijn eerst 2 Meter sessie ,het mooie programma van Jan Douwe Kroeske.
In aanwezigheid van ziJn hondje speelde hij toen hoofdzakelijk bluesnummers (volgens JDK),ikzelf ken deze opnames niet.In 1999 was Willy in Nederland in kader van het Crossing Border Festival en werden in het Astra Theater deze 2 Meter sessie opgenomen.

Spanish Stroll is een single van Mink DeVille, van het album Cabretta. ("¡Hey Rosita! ¿Dónde vas con mi carro, Rosita? Tú sabes que te quiero, pero tú me quitas todo") Het was de eerste kennismaking van Nederland,en mij, met Willy DeVille. Mooi live opname van dit nummer in het programma TopPop. (Mink DeVille was a house band at CBGB, the historic New York City nightclub where punk rock was born in the mid-1970s)
Spanish Stroll kwam op 20 in de UK Singles Chart; op nummer 3 the Netherlands en op 25 in New Zealand.

  "Across the Borderline", is geschreven door Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, en Jim Dickinson.Ik kende het nummer in de versie van  Freddy Fender,een van de tracks uit de film  The Border met. Jack Nicholson.

         met Freddy Koella ,die ik later nog enkele malen tegen zou komen in de band van Bob Dylan

 In February 2009 Willy DeVille  died in New York City in the late hours of August 6, 2009, three weeks shy of his 59th birthday.
About his legacy, DeVille told an interviewer, "I have a theory. I know that I'll sell much more records when I'm dead. It isn't very pleasant, but I have to get used to this idea."^[
Jack Nitzsche said that DeVille was the best singer he had ever worked with.
