Grateful Dead - One More Saturday Night

The Grateful Dead played the third of three Europe ‘72 Tour shows in Denmark when they returned on April 17 to Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. The non-linear tour routing saw the band perform at Tivoli Concert Hall on Friday, April 14, take a day off, play 200 miles away in Aarhus on Sunday, April 16 and then head back to Tivoli Concert Hall to tape a Danish television appearance on Monday, April 17.

The April 17 show was recorded for Danish television and part of the concert was broadcast live. According to (Europe ’72 Tour manager) Sam Cutler’s interview for the enlightening Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast, it was the first time a rock band had performed live on Danish television. In addition to the live broadcast, portions of the concert were shown on Danish television two more times in August 1972.

The second concert at Tivoli Concert Hall saw the band – guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, bassist Phil Lesh and keyboardists Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and Keith Godchaux – reunite with vocalist (and Keith’s wife) Donna Jean Godchaux who likely remained in Copenhagen while the rest of the band trekked back and forth between Aarhus.

"In sitting down to watch 'Sunshine Daydream,'
one gets a sense of revisiting history.
Because this was an era of unprecedented
accessibility, the Canis Major crew were able to
station their cameras squarely on the wings of
the stage, mere feet from the band.
The resulting footage allows the viewer to stand
almost shoulder-to-shoulder with a
very young Bob Weir, age 25, strumming a
cherry-red hollow-body guitar; a bushy-haired
Phil Lesh, dressed more like a surfer than a
bassist, and belting unexpected harmony
vocals; a fuzzily bearded Garcia, age 30,
smiling, not a gray hair in sight; and,
a tough-looking Bill Kreutzman, sitting
squatly on his drum stool, chewing gum and
wearing a railroad conductor's cap. Where most
Dead fans only witnessed these musicians
20 years later, and from the remote mezzanine
deck of a Checkerdome-Enormodome-Superstadium,
here suddenly is Garcia's boot tapping on a rusty
foot pedal, Phil Lesh leaping in front of
Kreutzman during a jazzy drums and bass solo,
and Bob Weir stepping timidly to the microphone after a long, haunting jam."

Grateful Dead - El Paso ( Tivoli Copenhagen Denmark 04/17/72)

                                           El Paso (Robbins)

Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead often introduced the Marty Robbins penned "El Paso" as the band's "most requested number." Over a twenty-five year period, The Dead performed the tune 389 times.
From the album"Steal Your Face"

The original

"El Paso" is a country and western ballad written and originally recorded by Marty Robbins, and first released on Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in September 1959. It was released as a single the following month, and became a major hit on both the country and pop music charts, reaching number one in both at the start of 1960. It won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording in 1961, and remains Robbins' best-known song. It is widely considered a genre classic for its gripping narrative which ends in the death of its protagonist, its shift from past to present tense, haunting harmonies by vocalists Bobby Sykes and Jim Glaser (of the Glaser Brothers) and the eloquent and varied Spanish guitar accompaniment by Grady Martin that lends the recording a distinctive Tex-Mex feel. The name of the character Feleena was based upon a schoolmate of Robbins in the fifth grade — Fidelina Martinez.
