Review of the concert year 2017, highlights - King Of The World (Ridderkerk 1 April 2017)

Ik zag deze band dit jaar drie keer optreden waaronder op dit mooie festival in Ridderkerk,langzamerhand een vaste waarde op de festivalagenda.In dit nummer een hoofdrol voor gitarist Erwin Java.de band bestaat verder uit Ruud Weber(bass/zang), Govert van der Kolm(keys), Fokke de Jong (Drums) De optredens van deze band behoren zeker tot de hoogtepunten van concertjaar 2017

    Can,t Go Home

 Ik had de naam Thad Beckman al dikwijls voorbij zien komen,een behoorlijke naam in de americana/roots kringen. Op deze wat sombere maandagavond stond hij geprogrammeerd in Cafe/Theaterzaal  t,Zwijnshoofd in kader van de crossroad-sessions

Het bleek dat hij al geruime tijd op het verlanglijstje stond van de organisatoren, het was dan ook mooi  dat ze hem op de laatste dag van zijn Nederlandse tour konden strikken

   
 Het optreden vond  plaats in het cafe gedeelte,een plaats waar de tijd is stil blijven staan.Het gaf het geheel een nostalgisch tintje,een bijzondere sfeer.                                                  

                                                      
 Het optreden was van de eerste tot de laatste minuut boeiend.Mooie songs,geweldig gitaarspel.Bovendien is Thad een man met een mooi verhaal.

Thad Beckman speelde in de jaren tachtig als gitarist bij legendarische artiesten als Bo Diddley, The Shirelles en Earl Thomas.  Ook in de Late Show van David Letterman was hij al te gast Solo heeft hij ondertussen al vijf albums op zijn  naam staan, allemaal zeer de moeite waard.
                                             

                                         
Op de setlist o.a ook het Bob Dylan  nummer "Bucket Of Rain "en Jimmy Reeds "Bright Lights Big City"
Een van de hoogtepunten van de avond was voor mij "A Soldier Returns Home" een instrumentaal nummer,maar zo veelzeggend dat een tekst niet nodig was,

Natuurlijk nog zijn laatste album gescoord(zeer de moeite waard) en na afloop een mooi gesprek ,o a andere over de veel te vroeg overleden Ad van Meurs ,ook een goede bekende van Thad Beckman

                                    Al met al een zeer mooie,boeiende en muzikale avond.

Het jaar 2017 loopt weer ten einde.,tijd voor een terugblik Veel mooie optredens gezien en festivals meegemaakt.Soms een filmpje/fotootje als herinerring aan de mooie momenten.Een kleine selectie,te beginnen met Buddy Guy op het prachtige HIBF in Grolloo

 Een vrolijke en bijzonder fitte Buddy Guy als afsluiting van dag 1 van het H.I.B.F in Grolloo

Neil Young & Booker T & the M.G,s - Separate Ways (Torhout Belgium 1993 )

In 1993, Neil Young collaborated with Booker T and the MGs for a summer tour of Europe and North America.
  I saw two performances in this line-up, one in Ahoy Rotterdam (Holland) and one in Torhout (Belgium) Two very special performances ..

 Houston Chronicle critic Marty Racine, who saw the show… in Houston, was also impressed. Praising the Cropper/Young guitar interplay, he wrote, “Due to a restless muse and a repertoire three decades long, Young’s oldest music sounded ever poignant. And thanks to his able backup, the songs were served well. In the land of Noise, that combination made the loudest impact of all.”

  "He'll Have to Go" is an American country and pop hit recorded on October 15, 1959, by Jim Reeves. The song, released in the fall of 1959, went on to become a massive hit in both genres early in 1960.



 "He'll Have to Go" has been covered by many artists. Elvis Presley recorded his version of "He'll Have to Go" on October 31, 1976, at his last known studio recording session; it is believed to be the final song he ever recorded in a studio setting.^[9]
The song prompted the answer song "He'll Have to Stay" by Jeanne Black. Her song reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot C&W Sides chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 later in 1960. Skeeter Davis made a cover of it in 1961. "He'll Have to Stay" also got an answer song: "I'm Gonna Stay". It was recorded by Johnny Scoggins and released on the single Fraternity Records 869.
This song was also done by Solomon Burke in 1965/66(c) on the Soul chart. It was one of his biggest hits.
Harry James recorded a version on the 1966 album Harry James & His Western Friends (Dot DLP 3735 and DLP 25735).
Ry Cooder covered the song on his 1976 album Chicken Skin Music.
Anne Murray, Connie Francis, Mary Ford, Jerry Lee Lewis, Nat King Cole and Tom Jones have recorded versions of the song.

Van Morrison - Common One (Hollywood Bowl - Nov.8 - 2008)

     Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl is the fifth live album recorded by Northern Irish singer/songwriter Van Morrison, It was recorded during two live concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California in 2008 ^.
The live performances of the eight original songs that feature on the album were recorded on November 7 and 08, 2008. Coincidentally, they took place forty years after the classic Astral Weeks was first released by Warner Bros. Records in 1968.

   Paint It Black

"Paint It Black" (originally released as "Paint It, Black") is a song by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and first released as a single on 6 May 1966. It was later included as the opening track to the US version of their 1966 album, Aftermath.

 Eric Burdon covered it on the 1967 Eric Burdon & The Animals debut album, Winds of Change.

 Monterey

Eric Burdon and the Animals performed at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival at the peak of the Summer of Love; they followed Johnny Rivers onstage and were introduced by Chet Helms. In his book, Monterey Pop, Joel Selvin wrote that, at the festival, "Burdon did nothing short of reinvent himself in front of the audience."

 The song "Monterey" was subsequently written in tribute to the group's experiences at the festival, and proved to be one of the new band's biggest hits. The lyrics describe the atmosphere of the festival and some of the notable musicians who played, including The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, The Who, Hugh Masekela, The Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix, as "young gods" with music "born of love" and "religion was being born." The band described a scene at which "children danced night and day", and "even the cops grooved with us." "His Majesty Prince Jones" referred to Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, who was an MC at the event. Before the ending of the song, Burdon quoted the Byrds song "Renaissance Fair": "I think that Maybe I'm Dreamin'".
