Ik zag Tiny Legs Tim(Tim De Graeve) al diverse malen optreden ,zowel solo,als duo (met Guy Verlinde)als met een band.Zijn interpertatie van het begrip "blues"bevalt mij prima,niet overdreven spectaculair,goed gezongen en gedegen gitaarspel.Zijn laatste album "Steppin Up" klinkt hier regelmatig uit de boxen,en met zo goed als dezelfde bezetting van dit album stond Tim deze avond op het podium van De Piek in Vlissingen

Deze bestond uit Tim De Graeve (gitaar/vocals)Steven Troch(harmonica)Karel Algoed (bas) en Frederik van den Berge (drums) Een zeer swingend geheel en we hadden een absoluut muzikale topavond.

The Jayhawks - De Roma Antwerpen (20 Sept.2016)

Een pareltje,deze concertzaal gelegen in niet bepaald het mooiste deel van Antwerpen.
Gebouwd in 1928 en jarenlang de grootste cinemazaal van de stad.Het gebouw heeft 20 jaar leeggestaan,maar met behulp van veel vrijwillige handen staat er weer een prachtig theater annex concertzaal.Ik kom er graag en heb er al diverse mooie concerten mee mogen maken.Op deze mooie zwoele nazomeravond stonden The Jayhawks op het programma.

Ik was ze een beetje uit het oog verloren The Jayhawks ,maar een artikel in het magazine 
"Heaven "zette weer op het spoor van de band. In de jaren 90 zag ik ze o.a op PinkPop en was toen behoorlijk onder de indruk.Mooie samenzang en gitaarspel ,het begin van de alternatieve countryrock.

Gary Louris en Mark Olsen waren gezichtsbepalend voor de band maar Mark gaf er al snel de brui aan en koos voor een solocarriere. In het begin van deze eeuw probeerden ze het nog een keer samen met als gevolg een mooi album "'Mockinbird Time" maar hierna gaf Mark er toch weer plotseling de brui aan.

De huidige bezetting van The Jayhawks is Gary Louris (guitar/vocals),Mark Perlman (bass)
Karen Grotberg(key,s/vocals) Tim O,Reagan (drums/vocals)en Chet Lister (guitar/vocals).

Het is misschien allemaal wat gepolijster ,maar vanaf het openingsnummer "Waiting for The Sun"blijkt dat de unieke "Jayhawks" sound nog steeds in tact is gebleven.Gary Louris met zijn vrij hoge stemgeluid,,drummer Tim heeft een uitstekende tweede stem en toetsenist Karen draagt ook regelmatig haar steentje bij.

Alhoewel niet helemaal bekend met het uitgebreide repertoire van de band waren er toch veel momenten van herkenning.o.a Waiting for The Sun en natuurlijk Take me With You (When You Go).
Dit nummer was zelfs een hit in Nederland.
Door de mooie samenzang ,kwamen bij mij af en toe zelfs.The Beatles bovendrijven.

Veel nummers van het nieuwe album "Pagin Mr "Proust" waaronder "Pretty roses In Your hair""voor mij een van de hoogtepunten van de avond

In  de toegift deed Gary twee nummers solo ,waaronder het mooie "Broken Harpoen" waarna de hele band voor een stevig slot akkoord zorgde.

Na afloop nog een gezellige nazit,Gary Louris ,Karen en bassist Mark bleken zeer spraakzaam en leuk tijdens de cd verkoop. Natuurlijk het nieuwe album gescoord,deze in de player zorgde voor een zeer aangename thuisreis. Een mooie avond!

Wat een geweldige opener van het nieuwe seizoen in De Viersprong.
Met de keuze,s van de programmeurs(Hans)van  deze bluesclub zit het meestal wel goed.,maar deze keer hadden ze wel een zeer bijzondere artiest in huis gehaald.Een voor mij onbekende SaRon Crenshaw ,een Amerikaans Gitarist/zanger begeleid door de Nederlandse band BlindB & The Visionairs.Het werd een prachtig optreden,de mooie foto,s van Gert Schipper geven een goed sfeerbeeld van deze avond (de audio is niet van deze avond)

Het spel van SaRon Crenshaw is geinspereerd door artiesten als ,BB King,Albert King,Albert Collins,Steve Ray Vaughan,"Robert Cray ,Buddy Guy en tijdens de toegift hoorde ik toch ook Eric Clapton en Jimi Hendrix nog voorbijkomen.De uitvoering van "Old Love"(Clapton/Cray)was voor mij een van de vele hoogtepunten van de avond.Dat behalve gitarist/zanger  SaRon ook een uitstekend entertainer is blijkt uit onderstaand fragmenten

SaRon Crensaw was voor vier optredens overgekomen uit Amerika.De begeleiding was in deskundige handen van Blind B & the Visionairs

 Het is de bedoeling dat er van deze tour een live cd word opgenomen,pre -order is mogelijk van via de webside van Blind B.

  Blind B & the Visionairs is een meeslepende Rhythm & Blues band, geïnitieerd door bassist Bart Kamp, alias Blind B. Hij stelt The Visionairs samen uit het beste wat de Nederlandse en in dit geval Belgiesche Blues te bieden heeft. Deze avond was de samenstelling:

 Franky kennen we natuurlijk uit Sugar Boy & The Sinners,regelmatig te gast in Zeeland.

Het was een mooi combinatie ,deze band met Saron Crenshaw.Het resulteerde in een show van zon,n twee en half uur,het werd een onvergetelijke avond.

Eilen Jewell - (De Lantaren Rotterdam 10 Sept.2016)

Ik ken deze dame met haar uitstekend band nu zo,n 10 jaar. Ze maakt prachtige ,een soort alternatieve country songs,vertolkt door een mooie ,wat aparte stem.Nog een reden om te concerten van Eilen te bezoeken is gitarist Jerry Miller.Een meester op de gitaar ,enorm vingervlug,vooral tijdens de uptempo nummers gaat hij soms heerlijk los.Echtgenoot Jason Beek verzorgt het drumwerk en vocals, en de stuwende contra bas is van Shawn Supra

Zo ongeveer om de twee jaar steekt ze de oceaan wel een keer over voor en bezoek aan Europa.
Als ze Nederland  of Belgie aandoet (wat meestal wel het geval is)ben ik indien mogelijk wel een keer van de partij).Deze keer moesten we richting Rotterdam,naar het mooie theater De Lantaren ,praktisch onder de Erasmusbrug.

Dat Eilen Jewell in Nederland een behoorlijke fanbase heeft opgebouwd bleek wel ,een zo goed als uitverkochte zaal.Het werd een heerlijk optreden,veel bekende en vertrouwde nummers ,ook veel werk van het laatste album .Prachtig zaalgeluid en belichting.

Naast haar eigen werk ook covers van o.a  Lorreta Lynn (Deep  as your pocket),Eric Andersen(Dusty Box Car Wall),Memphis Minny(Nothing In Ramblin),Big Maybelle (Don,t Leave Poor Me),Sleepy John Estes(Drop Down Mama) en Bessy Smith (If You catch Me Stealing),en dan ben ik er vast nog een paar vergeten.Gelukkig stond mijn persoonlijke favoriet "Sea Of Tears"ook op de setlist.

Dochter Mavis(genoemd naar Mavis Staples)is ondertussen ook al weer twee jaar.In de toegift werd het nummer Songbird  opgedragen aan haar.Een mooi einde van een prachtig optreden.

Weer een geweldig optreden,Jason Ricci,vol overgave en natuurlijk weer begeleid door zijn uitstekende  band The Bad Kind .Een van de hoogtepunten van dit mooie festival

"Nobody" is a popular song with music by Bert Williams and lyrics by Alex Rogers, published in 1905.

The song was first publicly performed in February 1906, in the Broadway production Abyssinia. The show, which included live camels, was premièred at the Majestic Theater and continued the string of hits for the vaudeville team of Williams and Walker. "Nobody," became Bert Williams' signature theme, and the song he is best remembered for today. It is a doleful and ironic composition, replete with his dry observational wit, and is perfectly complemented by Williams' intimate, half-spoken singing style.
Williams became so identified with the song that he was obliged to sing it in almost every appearance for the rest of his life. He considered its success both blessing and curse:

Nikki Hill & Band - If You Want Blood (Swing Wespelaar 20 Aug.2016)

Niet alleen blues op Swing Wespelaar,maar ook Deep Soul en (Hard) Rock met Nikki Hill en haar band.Dit was de toegift van haar optreden ,en een tegelijk een sfeerbeeld van dit mooie festival.

 Hailing from Durham, North Carolina, Nikki comes by her Deep South soul honestly. Her musical roots began while singing in gospel choirs at church as a child. A stint living in nearby college town Chapel Hill introduced her to many different styles of music and the awareness of music (and more importantly, unique and non-mainstream music) as a possible career. After pairing up with her guitar-playing husband Matt Hill, they have made an unstoppable team and have established themselves as roots rock and roll powerhouses!

Nikki Hill -If You Want Blood  (AC/DC) Swing... door  morrisanddylan

 Nikki Hill’s self-titled EP released in June of 2012 created a heavy and sudden international underground buzz that the band has traveled with from state to state and overseas. Those 4 tunes penned by Hill herself, proved that they have an energy that appeals to everyone who is ready to dance, drawing crowds from every avenue at their shows. One club advertisement will call Nikki “The Southern Fireball”, “the new soul sensation”, “amazing R&B shouter”, and even “the new Queen of Rock and Roll”. Moving into 2013 with more songs, more energy, and a desire to play their music for the world, the band is still gaining momentum and appear to have no plans of stopping, as they are continuing to tour all over the United States, Europe and Australia after Hill’s newest debut full length album Here’s Nikki Hill, released in April 2013, helps them spread their message of rock ‘n’ soul to believers and new converts everywhere!
