Otis Gibbs is een singer-songwriter afkomstig van het platteland van Indiana. Hij schrijft liedjes in de sfeer van Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie en Townes Van Zandt.
Een man zonder steralures,met gitaar op het podium ,de ene mooie song na de ander,subtiel gitaarspel.Als afsluiter een prachtige ,,unplugged,,song.Kortom een heerlijke muzikale avond.

Een week later waren weer te gast in de Wegwijzer,deze keer voor een optreden van Tom Skinner, Gene Williams en Don Morris ,oftewel The Red Dirt singer/songwriters uit Tulsa Oklahoma.Ook deze keer was het weer genieten.Tom Skinner heeft een prachtige stem,hij formeerde ooit met Garth Brooks een locale country groep.

Coney Island

"Coney Island" is a spoken-word song written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison and included on his 1989 album, Avalon Sunset. The narrative is accompanied by lush instrumentation which successfully[citation needed] contrasts with Morrison's thick Ulster brogue. The singer revisits his youthful trips with his mother to the seaside at Coney Island, in County Down, Northern Ireland. The trip from Belfast in the song names the localities of Downpatrick, St. John's Point, Strangford Lough, Shrigley, Killyleagh, Lecale District and Ardglass. The narrative vividly pictures a bright Autumn day of birdwatching, stopping for Sunday papers, and for "a couple of jars of mussels and some potted herrings in case we get famished before dinner." A reviewer noted: "You get a great rush of satisfaction here; in knowing that Van Morrison, despite his long, painful progress towards spiritual election, is still a ravenous foodie at heart."

The village of Shrigley dating back to 1824 was replaced with modern homes and shops after 1968 but a restored village as seen by Morrison and his mother is being planned.

Solomon Burke Overleden

Ik kreeg zojuist het bericht door dat Solomon Burke is overleden.
Zie bericht:
De Amerikaanse soulzanger Solomon Burke is overleden op Schiphol. Dat heeft een woordvoerder van de luchthaven bevestigd.
Nadere bijzonderheden ontbreken nog. Wel is duidelijk dat hij na aankomst is overleden in het vliegtuig.
Burke kwam vanochtend op Schiphol aan vanuit zijn woonplaats Los Angeles. Hij zou later deze week optreden met De Dijk in Paradiso.

Solomon Burke is zeventig jaar geworden. Hij was in de jaren zestig een van de grote artiesten van het beroemde Atlantic-label.

In de jaren zestig had Burke hits als 'Cry to me' en 'Everybody needs somebody to love'. Zelf had hij verder weinig grote hits, maar uitvoeringen van zijn liedjes door anderen zijn klassiekers geworden. Zo werd 'Everybody needs somebody to love' opgenomen door onder meer de Rolling Stones en de Blues Brothers.

Naast zanger was Burke ook dominee. Hij had een kerk in Los Angeles.
Burke was een markante verschijning op het toneel. Hij was zo corpulent, zo'n 200 kilo, dat zelfstandig lopen de laatste jaren niet meer mogelijk was. Zingen deed hij vanaf een troon, wat zijn handelsmerk werd.

De afgelopen jaren werd hij ontdekt door een jonger publiek, onder meer dankzij optredens op het North Sea Jazz Festival (2005) en Pinkpop (2003). Zijn album 'Don't give up on me' won in 2002 een Grammy. En in 2003 zong hij ook op 'Catch up to my step' van Junkie XL.

Na een optreden in Londen, eind september, beloofde Burke te blijven zingen tot hij niet meer kon. "Zo lang ik nog adem, blijf ik zingen."

Deze song gaat over ene Rudiger, een Duitse handtekeningenjager die echt bestaat en ook Mark Knopfler regelmatig lastigvalt,, Rüdiger waits at the hall in Berlin, He waits there all night, Security's tight, They know who he is but they don't let him in,, Rüdiger was er zelf bij toen dit nummer in 2001 werd gespeeld in Berlijn. De man is invalide en zit in een rolstoel. Maar hij zal wel apetrots zijn dat er een nummer over hem is geschreven.

WAR was de begeleidingsband van Deacon Jones ,een American Football Player(LA Rams)die tussen het voetballen door optrad als Rythm and Blueszanger.De band heette toenNightShift. Producer Jerry Goldstein kwam op het idee van een samenwerking tussen Eric Burdon en deze band ,hij noemde het"Eric Burdon Declares WAR".
