Blind John Davis - Annie Lou Breakdown

Blind John Davis (December 7, 1913 – October 12, 1985)was an American blues and boogie-woogie pianist and singer. He is best remembered for his recordings, including "A Little Every Day" and "Everybody's Boogie".                                                     

Blind John Davis was an accomplished session pianist who played on many seminal records in Chicago in the 30s and 40s and who was later a missionary of the Blues as it took root in Europe. John went blind at nine years of age and began playing piano in his father’s Chicago ‘speakeasy’ in the late 20s. His obvious talents brought him to the attention of Bluebird Records in 1938 where he cut several solo tracks, but it was his work on the records of John Lee ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson, Tampa Red, Lonnie Johnson and Big Bill Broonzy that made his name. Outside his session work, John led his own small band on the vibrant Chicago club scene. In 1952 he joined Big Bill on his ground-breaking tour of Europe that did so much to spark interest in the Blues beyond America, and opened a new chapter in John’s career. 

 John was a popular visitor to Europe over the whole of the rest of his life, and he cut several albums there, most notably ‘Stompin’ on a Saturday Night’, a live album recorded in Germany in 1976. John’s lilting voice and smooth piano style gave his Blues a sophisticated flavour, but when he played boogie-woogie he could really rock out. John was a strong performer on the Chicago club scene for the rest of his life, which came to an end in his hometown in 1985.

  Neil Young knew that Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) had a drug problem, and when he learned that an overdose of Kurt had nearly killed him in Rome, he tried to get in touch through the usual channels. with the singer/guitarist. That probably didn't work out, but ironically enough, in Kurt's suicide note after his suicide, there was a quote from one of Neil's most famous songs Hey,Hey,My,my "It's better to burn out than to fade away."

Aaron Thibeaux "T-Bone" Walker (May 28, 1910 – March 16, 1975) was an American blues musician, composer, songwriter and bandleader, who was a pioneer and innovator of the jump blues, West Coast blues, and electric blues sounds. In 2018 Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 67 on its list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

 

Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi (Wembley Arena London 24-4-83)

Mitchell said this about writing the song to journalist Alan McDougall in the early 1970s:

I wrote 'Big Yellow Taxi' on my first trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart... this blight on paradise. That's when I sat down and wrote the song.^[5]

The song is known for its environmental concern – "They paved paradise to put up a parking lot" and "Hey farmer, farmer, put away that DDT now" – and sentimental sound. The line "They took all the trees, and put 'em in a tree museum / And charged the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em" refers to Foster Botanical Garden in downtown Honolulu, which is a living museum of tropical plants, some rare and endangered.^[6]
In the song's final verse, the political gives way to the personal. Mitchell recounts the departure of her "old man" in the titular "big yellow taxi," which may refer to the old Metro Toronto Police patrol cars, which until 1986 were painted yellow.^[7] In many covers the departed one may be interpreted as variously a boyfriend, a husband or a father. The literal interpretation is that he is walking out on the singer by taking a taxi; otherwise it is assumed he is being taken away by the authorities.
Mitchell's original recording was first released as a single and then, as stated above, included on her 1970 album Ladies of the Canyon. A later live version was released in 1974 (1975 in France and Spain) and reached No. 24 on the U.S. charts. Mitchell's playful closing vocals have made the song one of the most identifiable in her repertoire, still receiving significant airplay in Canada. In 2005, it was voted No. 9 on CBC's list of the top 50 essential Canadian tracks.

  Village Music Record Store was/is a beautiful music store in Mill Valley California. The owner John Goddard regularly organized concerts at the nearby club The Sweetwater. This was one of them, a great session with John Lee Hooker, Ry Cooder, Carlos Santana Albert Collins and Nick Lowe. The images are a bit dark, but the sound is fine. The Village Music Record Store, I could spend a day here.

Village Music opened during the 1940s and the location moved twice before it settled at 9 East Blithedale Ave, Mill Valley in 1961. John Goddard was born in Mill Valley and in 1957, at the age of 13, he started working at Village Music when it was a mom‐and‐pop music store in the Sequoia Theater building. Goddard purchased the business in 1968.

Dear Friends, Customers and Fans of Village Music,

It is with no small amount of regret that I announce that 2007 will be Village Music's final year. We will be closing on September 30, 2007.

While the deciding factor in this decision has been the rent levels necessary to maintain a business in Mill Valley, this is only one of several reasons I've reached this decision. Basically - it's time. I've had a great time here for a great many years. The things I've learned, the people I've met, and the ways in which my musical horizons have expanded (and on some levels, solidified) have been probably the major focus of my life for 40 years. it has been, for the most part, wonderful.

Beginning on January Ist, we will begin a phased liquidation of not only the stock in the store, the contents of my storage area (some of which have never seen the retail light of day), but also most of the memorabilia on the walls, which has helped make the store world-famous. There will be various prices which will change (and/or) decrease monthly as September approaches. I will also be considering reasonable offers on the higher-end memorabilia on the walls.

We will continue adding to the stock right along, as we will not stop acquiring stock for some time. Credit slips, as always, will only apply to sticker prices, not sale prices. All consignment products must be picked up by July 31st, at which point whatever is still there will be "consigned" to the bargain bins.

This is a decision, which has been a long time coming, and the final decision has not been taken lightly. As I said - it's time. I would like to take this time to thank all of my past and present employees, from Robin through Gary, without whose help this store would not be what it is today.

"Fly Like an Eagle" is a song written by Steve Miller for the album of the same name. The song was released in the United Kingdom in August 1976 and in the United States in December 1976.It went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the week of March 12, 1977. The single edit can be found on Greatest Hits (1974–1978). The song has an unusually mellow and "dreamy" feel. It is usually played in tandem with "Space Intro", but the song also segues into "Wild Mountain Honey".

"Saint Dominic's Preview" is the title song of the sixth album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in July 1972 by Warner Bros. It was recorded at the Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco in April 1972, with overdubs made later on. Morrison wrote it in a stream of consciousness in the same vein as some of his earlier works, particularly those on Astral Weeks. The song's narrative moves from France to San Francisco, Morrison's place of residence at the time, to Belfast, where he grew up, to New York City ("52nd Street apartment").

Morrison revealed that the song came to him in a stream of consciousness, but only found out afterwards that a mass that was being held in a St. Dominic's church in San Francisco for peace in Belfast.He told John Grissim:

I'd been working on this song about the scene going down in Belfast. And I wasn't sure what I was writing but the central image seemed to be this church called St Dominic's where people were gathering to pray or hear a mass for peace in Northern Ireland. A few weeks later I was playing at a gig in Reno, Nevada. I picked up a newspaper, and there in front of me was an announcement about a mass for peace in Belfast to be said the next day at St Dominic's Church in San Francisco. Totally blew me out. Like I'd never even heard of a St Dominic's Church.

 Wainwright spoke of the song's genesis, and legacy, in an interview with the A.V. Club: "That's a kind of strange, long, allegorical song. I just kind of made that one up about somebody, although the idea of not being able to cry is an interesting one, particularly for men. The exciting thing about that one is that Johnny Cash recorded it, which was a huge thrill, to have somebody of his stature think it was good enough to record. I always think of that when I think of that song."

Cash recorded the song during a live performance at the Viper Room nightclub in Los Angeles. It was released on his 1994 American Recordings album.
