.It was in 2005 that I saw Gov,t Mule perform for the first time, on a rainy day in the beautiful open-air theater "Rivierenhof" in Antwerp (Belgium). I was very impressed, I continued to follow the band. After having seen 8 or 9 concerts by the band, it was now the turn of Tivoli / Vredenburg, one of my favorite venues.

Nice setlis with a solid start with songs from their early period (Mule, Monkey Hill). In my opinion the sound was adjusted a bit and we continued with Get Behind The Mule (Tom Waits)Wake Up Dead (album Heavy Load Blues)Larger Then Live (album Dose)Trane/Rumble/Sex machine/St.Stephen Jam ,great!!!After The Storm (album ..Peace like a river) and 32-20 (Robert Johnson) Beautiful first half, relax and time for coffee...

                                           

Good start to the second half, "Dreams" by The Allman Brothers. Warren Haynes has a good voice and great guitar playing. The biggest surprise is bassist Kevin Scott, powerful and beautiful collaboration with Warren.

We continue with beautiful "Ain't No Love in The Heart Of The City" by Bobby "Blue" Bland, beautiful performance.I Ask Her For Water (Howlin Wolf),Sco-Mule,One of the many highlights of the evening, instrumental. Bassist Kevin goes wild!Gone Too Long(album Peace like a River),Shake You Way Out(Billy Gibbons) and Mr Man((album Deja VooDoo)

The Allman Brothers at The Orpheum Theatre 12-3-2011 (repost)

 The Orpheum Theater is a musical theater located at 1 Hamilton Place in Boston, Massachusetts. One of the oldest theaters in the United States, built in 1852 and initially known as the Boston Music Hall, home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The name was changed to the Orpheum Theater in 1906 and has been used for live music concerts ever since.

Guitarist and singer Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band was recently told that two veterans are calling it quits this year. Both guitarist Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes have confirmed that they will be leaving the legendary band this year to focus on their own bands. They stay with the band until the 45th anniversary and then pack up.

Gov't Mule leader Haynes was part of The Allman Brothers Band for no less than 25 years and Derek Trucks, who, together with his wife Susan Tedeschi, forms the heart of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, has been playing for 15 years. In a joint statement the gentlemen say: 'We will be forever grateful for the opportunity and the experience, and for the love, enthusiasm, and support of the incredible fans. We are both preparing to dig even deeper into our various creative and musical endeavors; and, as a result, 2014 will be our final year as part of the band.' Too bad, I would have liked to see the band in action "live" again with this line-up, but that won't be possible anymore. So we'll just make do with the amount of film material that is in circulation of the band.

 
 "Into the Mystic" one of my favorite Van Morrison songs. Covered by various artists, one more beautiful than the other. Warren Haynes also thinks it is a beautiful song, I think. I have already seen several performances by him, both solo and with Gov,t Mule, as with The Dead and with The Allman Brothers. This one is also very nice.

 

 "All Along the Watchtower" written by Bob Dylan, released on his eighth studio album John Wesley Harding in 1967. It is Hendrix's version that made the song famous. Electric Ladyland was his best-selling album, and the Watchtower was the only single to reach 20th on the US charts during his lifetime.

                     "Working Class Hero" is a song by John Lennon. He used the song for his 1970 album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.

 

Revival

The first Allman Brothers song to hit the charts, it reached #92 in America. It was also the band's first song not written by Gregg Allman. Guitarist Dickey Betts wrote it.

Stateboro Blues
Statesboro Blues" is een song van Blind Willie McTell die refereert aan de stad Statesboro in Georgia. Door veel artiesten gecoverd maar deze versie kwam op plaats 9 van het muziekblad ,,Rolling Stone,, op de lijst van ,,100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time ,,

De band werd in 1969 opgericht door Duane Allman (gitaar), Gregg Allman (vocalen en orgel), Dicke Betts (gitaar), Berry Oakley (basgitaar), Butch Trucks (drums) en Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums).


Kind Of Bird
Geschreven door Warren Haynes en Dickey Betts.Beide liefhebbers van de muziek van Charlie Parker (nickname,,Bird,,)

In maart 1971 speelde de band enkele malen in de Fillmore East. Deze optredens zijn opgenomen en te horen op hun derde album, de dubbel-LP At Filmore East. Het album werd een doorslaand succes en groeide uit tot een klassieker, die wordt beschouwd als een van de beste live- en bluesrock-albums allertijden.

Dickey Betts jongste dochter heet Jessica,schreef het nummer toen hij haar op eenjarige leeftijd door de kamer zag kruipen

Op 29 oktober 1971, niet lang nadat At Filmore East de gouden status had verworven, kwam Duane Allman in een motorongeluk om het leven. Ondanks het verlies van de leadman besloot de band toch door te gaan en de opnames van het vierde album af te maken. Dickey Betts nam de rol van Duane over op Eat a Peach. Na enkele optredens als een vijfkoppige band werd er besloten weer een zesde lid en een nieuw muzikant toe te voegen aan de band. Het werd pianist Chuck Leavell.


Whippin Post
Whipping Post" is gesschreven door Gregg Allman,de originele versie staat op het debuutalbum The Allman Brothers Band.Maar de mooiste versie staat op het dubbel album live At Fillmore East,een versie van 23 minuten (een hele plaatkant)

In 1976 viel de band uit elkaar, toen Gregg Allman werd opgepakt voor meerdere drugs-gerelateerde misdrijven en getuigde tegen een vriend en medewerker van de band. Leavell, Johanson en Williams vormden samen de band Sea Level, en Betts ging verder met zijn solo-carrière. Capricorn bracht hierna enkele albums uit met nog niet eerder uitgebracht materiaal en live-opnames, waaronder Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas.


Ramblin Man
Geschreven door Dickey Betts, komt van het album Brothers and Sisters en gebazeerd op een nummer van Hank Williams uit 1951.Het was hun eerste en enige top 10 single
(nr 2 in de Billboard Hot 100 chart)

Pas in 1989 kwam de groep weer bij elkaar, mede door het succes van een uit vier cd's bestaande compilatiealbum, uitgebracht door PolyGram. De band was niet compleet: Leavell was op tournee met de Rolling Stones en Williams was in 1983 gestorven aan kanker. De band werd aangevuld met gitarist Warren Haynes en bassist Allen Woody. De groep sloot een contract met Epic Records en bracht in 1990 het album Seven Turns uit, dat zeer goed werd ontvangen bij critici en hun bestverkopende album in jaren werd.

Het programma zag er veelbelovend uit,de locatie was prachtig en het weer werkte ook bijzonder goed mee.Kortom,alle ingredienten voor een mooi festival waren aanwezig.De hoofdoelen van onze trip naar Utrecht waren Gov,t Mule en Beth Hart die wij (Caren,Willem en ikzelf)al enkele malen live mochten aanschouwen.Beth Hart was goed op dreef met haar uitstekende band.Veel up -tempo nummers ,maar natuurlijk ook een paar prachtige ballads waaronder het prachtige Blood Sweat & Tears nummer" I'll Love you More Than You'll Ever Know "wat mij betreft een hoogtepunt.

Daarna de beurt aan Gov,t Mule,opvallend is dat dit toch een echt "mannen "band is.Bestond het publiek bij Beth Hart zeker voor meer dan 50% uit de dames,bij The Mule voerden de boys de boventoon.Alhoewel Govt Mule een 4 mans formatie is er altijd nog wel een 5de persoon die de aandacht trekt ,en dat is roady Mark Farmer.Een zeer druk baasje ,altijs zeer "aanwezig" tijdens de soundcheck en ook tijden het optreden.Maar met resultaat ,het geluid van Gov,t Mule en zeker de gitaar van Warren Haynes klinkt altijd uitstekend.Aangezien de tijd tijdens een festival natuurlijk beperkt is was dit voor de band een vrij kort optreden,er was voor de volgende nummers gekozen.
Brazos,Steppin Lightly,BeatifulBroken,Confess,mijn persoonlijke favoriete Mule nummer ThorazineShuffle met een hoofdrol voor drummer Matt Abt,een nieuw nummer het prachtige Captured van het komende nieuwe album ,en daarna twee klassiekers I.m a Ram en Mule.
En dan de toegift,en wat voor een!Ik was er wel een beetje van uitgegaan dat Beth Hart en Gov,t Mule nog wat samen zouden doen,maar welke nummers?.Het eerste nummer was toch verrassend Don,t Need No Doctor,een Ray Charles nummer maar bekend geworden in de versie van Humble Pie.

En dan de afsluiter ,en tevens het hoogtepunt van deze mooie dag,het Warren Haynes nummer "Soulshine".Beth Hart had de song al gebruikt voor een van haar albums,maar deze uitvoering samen met Warren Haynes was toch wel heel bijzonder en erg mooi.

Wat een heerlijke dag ,en een festival zoals een festival hoort te zijn.Op de eerste plaats natuurlijk de goeie muziek.Daarnaast een zeer relaxte sfeer en een vrij bijzonder alternatieve catering.Speciale broodjes,barbeque,friet uit een puntzak en voor mij heel belangrijk,uitstekende koffie!!
Ik denk dat ik namens alle bezoekers de organisatoren zeer geslaagde dag,zeker voor herhaling vatbaar!

Howlin Wolf - Smokestack Lightning

Howlin' Wolf (White Station (in de buurt van West Point, Mississippi), 10 juni 1910 – Chicago (Illinois), 10 januari 1976), echte naam: Chester Arthur Burnett, was een Amerikaans blueszanger en -gitarist die veel invloed heeft gehad op de bluesmuziek.

                           
"Smoke Stack Lightning" (as listed on the original single, more commonly referred to as "Smokestack Lightning") is een song uit 1956 geschreven door Howlin' Wolf. Het staat op de albums Moanin' in the Moonlight en The Howlin' Wolf Album.
Wolf vertelde dat de song geinpereerd was door het in de nacht kijken naar de treinen die voorbij kwamen ."We used to sit out in the country and see the trains go by, watch the sparks come out of the smokestack. That was ,,smokestack lightning,,

Bij het uitbrengen van het nummer had de platenmaatschappij twijfels rond de tekst:

• Keep you doped with religion and sex and tv.

• But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see.

Uiteindelijk koos men om het woord "fucking" op de hoes te vervangen door een asterisk. Lennon stond erop dat expliciet vermeld werd dat dit op aandringen van de platenmaatschappij was.

De laatste twee keer dat ik Gov,t Mule in aktie zag was op festivals,tijd voor weer eens een volledig optreden Paradiso is natuurlijk de perfecte locatie,het zou een prachtige avond worden.Het eerste uur werd gevuld met het gebruikelijke Mule repertoire,de stemming zat er gelijk in.

 Mooie samenwerking van tussen twee bijzondere bands.Govt,Mule en de gebroeders Robinson van The Black Crowes.The Mule gaan we van de zomer weer zien op het Holland Bluesfestival in Grolloo.The Black Crowes zullen we waarschijnlijk nooit meer in aktie zien ,maar grappig is dat The Crowes toch op een andere manier op dit festival te zien zijn .en wel in de vorm van The Magpie Salute de band van Chris Robinson.Ook oud leden Marc Ford en Sven Pipien zijn van de partij.Beide band zijn op dezelfde avond(10 Juni)  geprogrammeerd,dus wie weet......

Gov,t Mule is al zo,n 15 jaar een van mijn favoriete 'Jam'' bands.Natuurlijk door het geweldige gitaarspel van Warren Haynes,maar ook de chemie tussen de andere bandleden Danny Louis(keys)Mat Abt(drums) en Jorgen Carlsson(bass) is altijd bijzonder om mee te maken.De band maakt regelmatig de oversteek naar Europa,komen ze in buurt Ned/Belg.probeer ik altijd wel een van hun optredens mee te maken.Ik was dan ook blij dat ze op Moulin Blues geprogrammeerd stonden ,het was ook een van de redenen om naar Ospel af te reizen.

Het moet gezegd,het was zeker niet mijn beste Gov,t Mule concert.Ondanks de bloedhete tent moest Warren Haynes blijkbaar toch wat warmdraaien ook wat problemen de pedals zo te zien Eenmaal op gang kwam de band er toch lekker in .Warren ging behoorlijk op de improvisatietoer en wat volgde was een toch meer dan behoorlijk optreden.De setlist was als volgt(dacht ik):Mule- I'd Rather Go Blind-Rocking Horse-Doing It To Dead-Time To Confess-Whisper In Your Soul- Good morning,schoolgirl - The Hunter en de toegift Soulshine.

 Een mooi slotakkoord ,van een zeer warm maar prachtig festival.Met voor mij als hoogtepunten de optredens van Danelle Nicole ,Jason Ricci en bovenstaande Gov,t Mule.

INTO THE MYSTIC

"Into the Mystic" is voor mij een van de mooiste Van Morrison nummers .Het staat op zijn album Moondance uit 1970 en ook op een van de beste Live Albums die ik ken It's Too Late To Stop Now.
Het nummer is een inspiratiebron voor veel artiesten en ik heb het dan ook al vele malen door anderen zien uitvoeren.Hier volgen een paar voorbeelden.

Gov,t Mule. WarrenHaynes en zijn maten zijn in staat om prachtige rockklassiekers te coveren.
Van Led Zeppelin tot Frank Zappa,Black Sabbath of The Beatles ,ze doen het allemaal,ik heb het met eigen ogen gezien.
Natuurlijk mag ook Van Morrison niet ontbreken,vandaar dit prachtige Into the Mystic

Glen Hansard,de geweldige zanger van The Frames is in zijn jeugd vooral beinvloed door Leonard Cohen,Bob Dylan en uiteraard Van Morrison
Tegenwoordig treed hij op met de Tsjechise paniste/zangeres Marketa Irglova en uiteraard staat Into the Mystic op het repetoire.


Levon Helm treed tegenwoordig op met zijn eigen ,,Band,,
Hier met de legendarische singer /songwriter Phoebe Snow


Natuurlijk komt Van the Man zelf ook nog aan de beurt.
Mooie opname met o.a Brian Kennedy.Into the Mystic staat nog regelmatig op de setlist van Van
dus wie weet op 10 okt.in de H.M.H.
