Blues legends Taj Mahal and Keb' Mo' stopped by the Paste studio on Aug. 14 to promote their latest collaboration record, the cleverly titled, TajMo. The duo started off with Taj Mahal's well known tune, Diving Duck Blues, which is featured on their new album

TajMo is a joint album by the American blues musicians Taj Mahal and Keb' Mo'. It was released May 5, 2017, and won the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. TajMo is the twenty-sixth studio album by Taj Mahal and the thirteenth by Keb' Mo'

"You Ain't No Streetwalker Mama, Honey But I Sure Do Love The Way You Strut Your Stuff."

 The relaxed groove continues on Taj Mahal's original "Big Kneed Girl," before the group pulls out all the stops by wrapping up the set with "You Ain't No Streetwalker Mama, Honey But I Sure Do Love The Way You Strut Your Stuff." This is the prime example of Taj and the group's dynamic control, as over the course of this extended jam, the group often plays softly and sparsely, making the louder passages even more exciting and dramatic. Everyone makes a strong contribution, but the standout musician may be pianist John Simon, who has played brilliantly throughout the set. In many ways, he is the glue that helps this unusual configuration jell so well on stage. This number also features more superb blues harp from Taj before it quietly dissolves signaling the end of the set.

The Fillmore East audience has no intention of letting things end here and their enthusiastic response entices Taj and the group back for an encore. Just shy of being complete due to tape stock running out, this features the entire group tackling Sleepy John Estes' "Diving Duck Blues." A song originally recorded for Taj's debut album, this is an altogether more exciting performance, fueled by Johnson's great horn arrangements and standout contributions from Simon and Hall, whose piano and lead guitar work respectively, are both outstanding. . The song Linda Lu was written by Ray Sharpe and was first released by Ray Sharpe in 1959. It was covered by Rusti Steel & The Tin Tax, Oiling Boiling Rhythm'n Blues Band, The Kingsmen , Cliff Ellis Taj Maha and many,many other artists.

A self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, piano, banjo and harmonica (among many other instruments), Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his almost 50-year career by fusing it with nontraditional forms, including sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.

Een mooie zomeravond in een zeer druk Antwerpen.Doel van het bezoek de mooie concertzaal (voorheen filmzaal) De Roma.Ik kom daar graag zag daar al mooie optredens o.a The Waterboys ,goed geluid en prima sfeer.
 Doel van de reis was deze keer het optreden het Taj Mahal Trio.Paar jaar geleden zag ik ze al in actie in De Handelbeurs in Gent ,een prima optreden en voldoende redenen voor een herhaling.

De jaren gaan tellen, ook bij Taj Mahal.Beweegt moeizaam en sinds zijn optreden in De Handelsbeurs een paar jaar geleden ook een kilootje of 10 aangekomen zo te zien.Ook zijn gitaarspel viel niet altijd mee ,natuurlijk de herkenbare klanken maar zat er af en toe toch ook behoorlijk naast.Gelukkig heeft zijn stem nog weinig aan kracht ingeboet.Wat volgende was voor mij toch behoorlijk optreden ,al waren achteraf de meningen hierover verdeelt.

Een optreden van Taj Mahal is een mix van  deltablues, countryblues, soulblues, reggae en carribian music. Het is ook goed te horen waar Ry Cooder door geinspereerd is ,of is het andersom?
Ook over het geluid deze avond kan gediscusseerd worden,de bas stond wat hard in de mix,dat zou in zaal ,zeker in deze akoestische setting ,beter  kunnen.

Ik herkende niet alle songs maar ik hoorde o.a CC Rider,Good Morning, Miss Brown(op dobro),Going Up To The Country, Paint My MailBox Blue,Honey Bee,Zanzibar(dacht ik),‘Blues With A Feeling(op piano),‘Sitting On Top Of The World,TV Mama,De toegift was She Caught The Katy (And Left Me A Mule T Ride)

De begeleiding werd gevormd door  Bill Rich op bass en Kester Smith op drums.
Het was zeker niet het beste concert van het jaar ,maar had toch een zeer aangename avond
