 David Charles (David) Olney (Providence, Rhode Island, 23 maart 1948 - Seaside (Florida), 18 januari 2020),David was an American singer-songwriter. He  had an enthusiastic fan base in the Netherlands. He recorded four of his concert albums in the Netherlands.

 David Olney has written many beautiful songs, and this is one of them, perhaps one of his finest. It's a song about the madness of the First World War and its aftermath, seen through the eyes of a French prostitute. I've had the pleasure of seeing David perform the song himself several times, and for me, it's always one of the highlights of his performances.(Recording engineer Pieter Groeneveld)

But this beautiful live performance by Linda and Emmylou also really appeals to me. Using a few fitting photos and recruitment posters from that period, I came up with the following video.

Had the pleasure to see David Olney perform several times during his visits to the Netherlands, including in Theater De Wegwijzer. Beautiful songs and,  a very sympathetic personality. Unfortunately, he passed away unexpectedly during a performance in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on January 18, 2020, at the age of seventy-one. He was in the middle of his third song when he stopped, apologized and shut his eyes, according to fellow musician Scott Miller, who was accompanying Olney

David Charles Olney  was an American folk singer-songwriter.Olney recorded more than 20 albums during his nearly five decades as a musician. His songs have been covered by numerous artists, including Emmylou Harris, Del McCoury, Linda Ronstadt and Steve Earle.

   I had the pleasure of attending some of David's performances. Impressive and, moreover, a very nice person. His sudden death was a shock. His music is well represented in my collection, and lives on here,forever... 

 
Olney died of an apparent heart attack during a performance onstage at the 30A Songwriter Festival in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on January 18, 2020, at age 71. He was in the middle of his third song when he stopped, apologized and shut his eyes, according to fellow musician Scott Miller who was accompanying Olney. "David was playing a song when he paused, said 'I'm sorry' and put his chin to his chest. He never dropped his guitar or fell off his stool. It was as easy and gentle as he was," Miller said

David Charles Olney (geboren 23 maart 1948 in Providence, Rhode Island) is eenAmerikaanse folk singer/songwriter. Hij bezocht de University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill maar studeerde niet af maar begon muziek te maken in Bland Simpson's band Simpson (band) in begin jaren70s. Hij vertrok naar Nashville in 1973 en formeerde de band The X-Rays (o.a met David Lindley) die redelijk bekend waren in de jaren eind 1970 begin 1980 . Daarna ging hij op pad als solo singer/songwriter. Zijn songs zijn gecoverd door o.a Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, en Laurie Lewis .
En Arthur is al jaren een grote fan van deze meneer.



Behalve Arthur heeft David in Nederland een behoorlijk grote schare bewonderaars waaronder Freek de Jonge en Ad VanderVeen.Freek heeeft een paar Live optredens met hem gedaan en Ad heeft op zijn album The moment that Matters bovenstaand nummer op een mooie manier gecoverd(met als gast David) .


Zelf ben ik ook enkele malen bij zijn indrukwekkende optredens geweest(o.a in het mooie Theater de Wegwijzer) en heb enkele woorden met hem kunnen wisselen,een zeer aardige bijna verlegen man.

David Olney hoort naar mijn mening zeker in de catorogie Townes van Zandt,Steve Earl,Guy Clark e.a Waar b.v. Townes Van Zandt het toonbeeld was van een door drank en ellende getekend leven - een typische singer-songwriter dus - kleeft aan David Olney het beeld van een doodgewone ambtenaar, of beter nog onderwijzer, maar belerend wordt hij nooit. Olney heeft gevoel voor humor, is dan ook niet somber, niet in zijn teksten en niet in zijn muziek.

Jaren geleden kwam ik bij toeval de CD David Olney live in Holland tegen.
Nooit van de man gehoord,maar wat een ontdekking!Blijkt een amerikaanse singer/songwriter te zijn .o.a Emmylou Harris heeft liedjes van hem opgenomen.(Deeper Wel,jerusalem Tomorrow) Was bevriend met wijlen Townez van Zandt en zijn werk is dan ook wel door hem beinvloed,
Ik heb hem ondertussen twee keer zien optreden in het prachtige theater De Wegwijzer en was zeer onder de indruk .
