Anthony "Duster" Bennett (23 September 1946 – 26 March 1976) was a British blues singer and musician

Bennett was born in Welshpool, Powys, Mid Wales. Emerging in the late sixties from the art school music scene of Kingston-upon-Thames and Guildford, Bennett was a one-man blues band whose virtuosity and co-ordination on drums, guitar and harmonica was as riveting as it was unique. His live sets combined his own compositions with Jimmy Reed-style blues standards often aided by friends Peter Green and Top Topham. He was a session musician in the early 1960s playing harmonica. Between 1968 and 1970 he seemed ever-present on John Peel's Top Gear and Sunday-repeated-on-Wednesday shows, gigged prodigiously and eventually joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers as band member/solo act on a US tour in 1970. In the 1970s he drifted off into more whimsical mainstream material, but never landed the hit record his catchy and accessible tunes deserved.

His music was country blues with the occasional gospel offering. He recorded three albums and a string of singles for Blue Horizon. Bright Lights was recorded live at his beloved Gin Mill Club. He was very popular amongst the blues cognoscenti, while his legacy on Smiling Like I'm Happy was the haunting Jumping at Shadows, subsequently covered by Fleetwood Mac and revived in 1992 by Gary Moore, who covered it in his "After Hours" album. It is considered by some to be one of the best blues compositions penned on the east side of the Atlantic. Attempts to gain wider appeal with Mickie Most were unsuccessful. For decades, a clutch of live and home recordings on Indigo seemed to be all that remained of his work in the CD public domain until the 2006 first-time CD release of the Complete Blue Horizon Sessions reminded fans of what had been lost.

After performing with Memphis Slim on 26 March 1976, Bennett was driving home in a Ford Transit van in Warwickshire when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel. The van collided with a truck and Bennett was killed.

Over in Europe there were also earlier pioneers who heard and spread the music. In the UK, Alexis Korner, Long John Baldry and many others, too have long since passed. Celmins’ “Jumping at Shadows” tells the story of the tragically short life of one who followed in those footsteps. The title, itself, is the first clue. “Jumping at Shadows” is his most enduring song, recorded several times and made his own by blues rocker Gary Moore. The author of that song has a story well worth following up. It’s a story tied up with the early British blues scene, along with much better known names – the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac.

The writer of “Jumping at Shadows” was Tony ‘Duster’ Bennett. Martin Celmins, who has also written a biography of Peter Green, has compiled a detailed account of Bennett’s short life. Bennett died in a road accident in 1976 at the age of 30.

Beetje "vergeten" filmpje op mijn een van mijn externe discs .Muddy Waters met een prachtige uitvoering van "Got My Mojo Working" Het jaar moet 1973 geweest zijn maar geen idee waar dit is opgenomen.Een hoofdrol in de band voor mondharmonicaspeler George "Mojo" Buford en ook opvallend drummer Willy "Big Eyes" Smith,wat een kanjer! Verder op gitaar Hollywood Fats en Bob Margolin.

Ronnie Earl is a two-time W. C. Handy Blues Music Award winner as Guitar Player of the Year. For five years he was an Associate Professor of Guitar at Berklee College of Music and in 1995 he released Ronnie Earl: Blues Guitar with Soul, an instructional VHS tape that was then rereleased in DVD format in 2005. Earl was also the blues instructor at the 'National Guitar Summer Workshop'. His albums primarily consist of strong instrumental compositions and traditional covers.


Smokin' Joe Kubek (born November 30, 1956, Grove City, Pennsylvania^[1]) is an American blues guitarist.
Although he was born in Pennsylvania, Kubek grew up in Texas and is associated with the Texas blues style. He played with Freddie King while still a teenager, and put together his own band to tour in the Dallas area.^[1] He met Bnois King in the 1980s, and together they put together the first incarnation of Kubek's band. Kubek signed to Bullseye Blues in 1991 and released his debut record; he has steadily released albums since then.

James "Yank" Rachell (March 16, 1910 – April 9, 1997) was an American country blues musician, dubbed an "elder statesman of the blues."

"The Thrill is Gone" is a blues song written by Rick Darnell and Roy Hawkins in 1951 and popularized by B. B. King in 1970. The song was first recorded by Hawkins and became a minor hit for the musician. King recorded his version of the song in June 1969 for his album Completely Well, released the same year. The song's polished production and use of strings marked a departure from both the original song and King's previous material. When released as a single in December of 1969, the song became the biggest hit of King's career (#3 R&B / #15 Pop) and his signature song. B. B. King's recording earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and a Grammy Hall of Fame award in 1998. King's version of the song was also placed at number 183 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs ever. Memorable live versions of the song were included on King's albums Live in Cook County Jail (1971), Bobby Bland and B.B. King Together Again...Live (1976), and Live at San Quentin (1991).

Zijn carriere begint al in de jaren 60, Moore hij speelt dan al samen met artiesten als Phil Lynott en Brian Downey  en in bands als Skid Row en Thin Lizzy . Moore deelde het podium met blues en rockartiesten als  B.B. King, Albert King, Colosseum II, George Harrison Albert Collins en Greg Lake, en had ook een zeer succesvolle solo carriere..Bij zijn helaas laatste optreden in de HMH Hal was ik samen met mijn zoon aanwezig(zie link)

Leadbelly

Huddy William Ledbetter (Mooringsport (Louisiana), 20 januari 1885 – New York City, 6 december 1949)
De zanger /guitarist is beter onder de naam Leadbelly. Hoewel veel van zijn nummers zijn uitgebracht onder de naam Leadbelly (als één woord), spelde hij het zelf als Lead Belly. Op deze manier staat het ook op zijn grafsteen en het naar hem vernoemde Lead Belly Foundation gebruikt ook deze spelling. Hij was de eerste zwarte zanger die door de blanke intellectuelen werd omarmd. Zijn repertoire was met name gericht op folk en blues. Tot zijn bekendste nummers behoren The house of the rising sun, The Midnight Special, Goodnight Irene, Cotton Fields en Rock Island Line. Leadbelly heeft lange tijd samengewerkt met Blind Lemon Jefferson en met John Lomax.


Leadbelly heeft meermalen in de gevangenis gezeten. In 1916 ontsnapte hij uit de gevangenis in Texas, waarna hij twee jaar door het leven ging als Walter Boyd. Toen vermoordde hij een man, waarna hij tot dertig jaar cel werd veroordeeld. In 1925 werd hem gratie verleend. Zijn gratieverzoek had hij muzikaal gebracht, met een liedje met de volgende tekst:

Please, Governor Neff, Be good 'n' kind
Have mercy on my great long time...
I don't see to save my soul
If I don't get a pardon, try me on a parole...
If I had you, Governor Neff, like you got me
I'd wake up in the mornin' and I'd set you free

Governor Neff is gouverneur Pat Morris Neff.

In 1930 werd Leadbelly veroordeeld wegens poging tot moord. In juli 1933 werd hij in de gevangenis bezocht door John en Alan Lomax, met wie hij enkele honderden nummers opnam. In 1934 diende hij opnieuw een muzikaal gratieverzoek in, wat ingewilligd werd. Vervolgens ging hij toeren met Lomax. Nadat Leadbelly in 1940 Lomax had bedreigd met een mes, beëindigde deze de vriendschap.

In 1949 begon Leadbelly aan zijn eerste Europese tournee, maar werd ziek voordat hij deze kon afmaken. Later dat jaar overleed hij aan de gevolgen van ALS in New York. Hij werd begraven in Caddo Parish (Louisiana).

En wat voor een band,bestaande uit topmuzikanten uit de bleusscene met Calvin Jones - Bass,Luther,,Guitar,,Johnson - Gitaar,Pinetop Perkins - Piano,Willy,,Big Eye,,Smith - Drums,en twee betrekkelijk nieuwkomers met nog een lange carriere in het vooruitzicht,Bob Margolin - Gitaar en Jerry Portnoy -Harmonica.

Luther Johnson (April 11, 1939, Itta Bena, Mississippi) is een Chicago blues zanger en en gitarist,Hij treed op onder de naam Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson.
Hij speelde in Muddy Waters's band vanaf1972 tot 1980.

Jerry Portnoy (born November 25, 1943, Chicago, Illinois[1]) is een Amerikaanse harmonica blues muzikant, hij toerde o.a met Muddy Waters and Eric Clapton.

JUNIOR WELLS (9-12-1934 _ 15-1-1998)

Junior Wells geboortenaam Amos Blakemore, was een blues zanger en harmonica speler uit Chicago en heeft gespelt met o.a Muddy Waters ,Buddy Guy,Bonnie Raitt ,The Stones ,Van Morisson en vele anderen.

Junior Wells leerde harmonica spelen van een andere legendarische artiest ,Little Junior Parker,voor hij op 12 jarige leeftijd naar Chicago vertrok.

In 1950 deed hij auditie bij de gitaristen Louis en David Meyers , hij werd aangenomen en de band The Deuces was geboren. toen ook drummer Fred Below zich bij hun aansloot veranderde zij hun naam in The Aces

Dit betekende niet het einde van de The Aces . De band begeleide Junior Wells tijden zijn sessies voor States Records. het leverde prachtige bluesnummers op als Hoodoo Man," "Cut That Out," en ronkende instrumentals als "Eagle Rock"en "Junior's Wail."

Nog meer vuurwerk het volgende jaar,het prachtige "So All Alone" en het stevige "Lawdy! Lawdy!" (Muddy Waters deed mee op gitaar)

In 1957 ging Junior Wells samenwerken met producerMel London . Dat resulteerde in mischien wel Wells beste werk. "I Could Cry" en het rock & rollerige "Lovey Dovey Lovely One" in 1957; de nationale R&B hit "Little by Little" (met Willy Dixon op vocals ) in 1959, en de R&B klassieker "Messin' with the Kid" in 1960 (prachtig gitaarwerk vanEarl Hooker ). Wells's harmonica spel¨en zijn zang was in deze periode op zijn top .

Met Bob Koester als producer maakte Junior Wells all-time classic LP voor Delmark in 1965. HooDooManBlues ,deze leek opgenomen in de huiskamer terwijl het toch echt een studio opname was. Met Buddy Guy op leadgitaar maakte Welss zijn definitieve versies van "Snatch It Back and Hold It," "You Don't Love Me," en "Chittlin' Con Carne."

Junior Wells kwam voor de tweede maal de nationale R&B lijsten binnen met een James Brown getint funkyachtig nummer "You're Tuff Enough," voor Mercury's Blue Rock label. De bluespuristen waren hier niet zo blij mee maar de R&B fans vonden het allemaal prachtig.Zijn door blazers ondersteunde single voor Bright Star, "Up in Heah," in 1966 werd lokaal een hit.

Op platengebied werd het in de 70ties wat rustig rondom Junior.
Hij bleef wel regelmatig optreden en verzorgde met Buddy Guy het voorprogramma van de Rolling Stones tijdens een wereldtournee.

Hoewel Junior Wells tot het eind van zijn leven bleef optreden werden er niet veel platen meer opgenomen.De paar die hij wel opnamen waren vrij teleursstellend.
Tijdens zijn laatste studio session in 1997 echter klonk Junior Wells weer als herboren en dat resulteerde in het album Come One In This House
Het album won de WC Handy Blues Award voor Traditional Blues Album in 1997.

Ondanks dat er in de zomer van 1997 lymphklierkanker bij Junior Wells werd ontdekt bleef hij nog regelmatig optreden.
Door een hartaanval raakte hij echter in een coma,hij bleef daarin tot zijn overlijden op 15 Januari 1998

Earl Hooker - You Shook Me

Earl Hooker (January 15, 1929 – April 21, 1970) was an American Chicago blues guitarist, perhaps best known for his slide guitar playing. Considered a "musician's musician", Hooker performed with blues artists such as Sonny Boy Williamson II, Junior Wells, and John Lee Hooker (a cousin) as well as fronting his own bands. An early player of the electric guitar, Hooker was influenced by the modern urban styles of T-Bone Walker and Robert Nighthawk. As a band leader, he recorded several singles and albums, in addition to recording with well-known artists. His "Blue Guitar", a popular Chicago area slide-guitar instrumental single, was later overdubbed with vocals by Muddy Waters and became the popular "You Shook Me".
In the late 1960s, Hooker began performing on the college and concert circuit and had several recording contracts. Just as his career was on an upswing, Earl Hooker died in 1970 at age 41 after a lifelong struggle with tuberculosis. His guitar playing has been acknowledged by many of his peers, including B.B. King, who commented: "to me he is the best of modern guitarists. Period. With the slide he was the best. It was nobody else like him, he was just one of a kind".^(Wikipedia)

Seasick Steve(met fan)-Walking Man

Seasick Steve, artiestennaam van Steven Gene Wold (Oakland, Californië, 1941 is een Amerikaans bluesmuzikant. Hij speelt vooral op aparte zelf gemaakte instrumenten, waaronder een driesnarige gitaar en zingt.



Als veertienjarige kiest Steve om weg te gaan uit zijn ouderlijk huis en een zwerversbestaan te leven. Hij wisselt verschillende baantjes af met (blues-)optredens. Hiermee raakt hij niet bekend, al deelt hij in de jaren zestig wel het podium met onder andere John Lee Hooker en Lightnin’ Hopkins.

In de herfst van 2006 brengt Steve zijn debuutplaat uit, Dog House Music. Aan het einde van dat jaar nodigt Jools Holland Seasick Steve uit om in zijn oudejaars-muziekshow Hootenanny, op de BBC, op te treden. Dit optreden betekent de doorbraak voor Seasick Steve, die inmiddels 66 jaar is.

Zijn eerste optreden in België is op Humo's Pop Poll, waar hij tot zijn eigen verbazing voor een met 12.000 mensen gevuld Sportpaleis staat. Enkele maanden later mag hij ook op Pukkelpop en in een volledig uitverkochte Ancienne Belgique optreden. Media spreken ondertussen van een hype rond de blueszanger.

Seasick Steve tekent bij platenmaatschappij Warner Brothers, die zijn tweede studioalbum wereldwijd uitbrengt: I Started Out With Nothin’ And Still Got Most Of It Left' in 2008. Beide albums worden overwegend positief ontvangen. Het succes van de plaat brengt hem op nog grotere podia: in 2009 staat hij op het hoofdpodium van Rock Werchter, en in 2010 op het hoofdpodium van Pukkelpop. Op donderdag 30 Juni 2011 zal hij weer op het hoofdpodium van Rock Werchter staan.
