Jan Akkerman is a Dutch guitarist who co-founded the progressive rock band Focus and played various genres of music. He won the Edison Award for best album in 1976 and collaborated with many other musicians and artists.
In late 1973 Akkerman was voted Best Guitar by readers of UK weekly Melody Maker, beating favorites such as John McLaughlin, Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore. Akkerman and Focus were the only ones to challenge the bias toward American and British pop artists. He placed in third a year later in Melody Maker's polls, after Eric Clapton and Steve Howe from Yes. With manufacturer Framus he helped produce one of the first signature guitar models.
Recorded at Atlantic Records' studios in New York and released in 1974, when Focus was still near the peak of its fame, Tabernakel sold reasonably well at the time, but had been unavailable from the late '70s until 2002, when Wounded Bird Records reissued it in a good-sounding CD edition.
