Christopher William Stoneking (geb. 1974, Katherine, Northern Territory) is een Australische blues singer-songwriter en gitaar/banjo speler.Hij woont in Melbourne, Australia en is nu internationaal aan het doorbreken.Hij trad o.a op bij Jools Holland en toer binnenkort door Europa met zijn band, the Primitive Horn Orchestra.
Voor mij een nieuwe ontdekking en vind het erg mooi.

Hij wordt wel een levend anachronisme genoemd. Alleen al door zijn verschijning (denk aan een jonge uitvoering van James Cagney) past C.W. Stoneking niet of nauwelijks in het straatbeeld van vandaag. En dan is er nog zijn voorliefde voor muziek en entertainment uit lang vervlogen tijden. Toch is de ster van de Amerikaanse Australiër, vooral bij jonge generaties, rijzende. Het is wat stil rond onze vriend Van Morrison,vorig jaar 65 geworden zou hij dan toch met pensioen zijn?Er is mij niets bekend van komende toernee,s ,en of hij bezig is met een nieuw album .Het zal toch niet betekenen dat zijn optreden vorig jaar in Peer mijn laatste Van Morrison concert is geweest? Of worden we straks verrast met een compleet nieuwe VM band met optredens in Carre of Vredenburg en ligt er een splinternieuw album op de planken.Ik heb er een hard hoofd in ,maar hoop doet leven.Gelukkig komt er mede dank zij het onvolprezen internet steeds meer audio en video materiaal boven water en kunnen we blijven genieten van de muziek van ,,Van The Man,,
Wat te denken van deze sfeervolle zwart/wit opnames van een optreden in het Capitol Theatre in New Jersey uit 1979

Crooked Still

Crooked Still is a self-styled alternative bluegrass band consisting of vocalist Aoife O'Donovan, banjo player Dr. Gregory Liszt, bassist Corey DiMario, cellist Tristan Clarridge and fiddler Brittany Haas. They are known for their high energy, technical skill, unusual instrumentation and innovative acoustic style.


My Dearest Friend

O'Donovan and DiMario met at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts in spring of 2001. Former cellist Rushad Eggleston, who was studying at Berklee College of Music, and Liszt, a graduate student at MIT, were playing music together around the same time, and when the four met that summer, they formed the band that would be Crooked Still. While its members finished school, Crooked Still played various Boston venues, growing in popularity and collecting favorable reviews from the local press, notably the The Boston Globe, Northeast Performer, and the Boston Herald.


Sleep Well

In 2004, the group was invited to perform at the Newport Folk Festival and Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, when their debut album, Hop High, was the top-selling album. Following the success of this first festival appearance, Crooked Still went on to appear at concert halls, festivals, coffeehouses, and nightclubs in 23 states and several countries. On August 22, 2006, the group released their second album, Shaken by a Low Sound.


Captain Captain

Cellist Rushad Eggleston performed his last show with the band on November 18, 2007, at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Massachusetts. He parted ways with Crooked Still to pursue his own music with band Tornado Rider. In January 2008 two new members joined the band: cellist Tristan Clarridge and fiddler Brittany Haas, both of whom have toured in Darol Anger's Republic of Strings. The band released its first album with the new lineup, Still Crooked in 2008.

Reverend Gary Davis, also Blind Gary Davis, was a blues and gospel singer and guitarist who was also proficient on the banjo and harmonica. His finger-picking guitar style influenced many other artists and his students in New York included Stefan Grossman, David Bromberg, Roy Book Binder, Larry Johnson, Woody Mann, Nick Katzman, Dave Van Ronk, Tom Winslow, and Ernie Hawkins.[1] He has influenced the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Townes van Zandt, Wizz Jones, Jorma Kaukonen, Keb' Mo', Ollabelle and Resurrection Band.

Jimmy Bruno
Jimmy Bruno (Philadelphia, 22 juli 1953 is een Amerikaans gitarist. Hij kwam al vroeg in aanraking met muziek doordat zijn moeder zong en zijn vader Jimmy Bruno sr. een notabele gitarist was bekend om zijn optreden in The Virtues (1959) waarmee hij een wereldhit scoorde met "Guitar Boogie Shuffle".

Op acht-jarige leeftijd kreeg de jonge Bruno een gitaar van zijn vader. Later toen hij 19 was (1973) had hij zijn eerste grote optreden met Buddy Rich en belande in de Philly holding auditions voor gitaristen. Na een jaar rondtrekken met Buddy had hij een behoorlijke muzikale opleiding. Hij heeft wat geprobeerd in Las Vegas maar vestigde zich uiteindelijk als studiomuzikant in Los Angeles. Nadat hij zich 1988 terug keerde naar Philadelphia vestigde hij zich als een virtuoos Jazz gitarist synoniem met het woord jazz gitaar. Hij nam diverse albums op voor Concord Records en Mel Bay Records.

Joe Beck
Joe Beck (July 29, 1945 – July 22, 2008) was an American guitarist who had been notable in jazz for more than 30 years.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Beck also briefly flirted with rock music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Beck played in a variety of jazz mediums, including jazz fusion, post bop, mainstream jazz and soul jazz.
Beck began as a member of the Gil Evans orchestra.
In 1970 he released Rock Encounter on Polydor Records. In 1975 he released a self-titled album for Kudu Records. With Esther Phillips, he released an album, What a Diff'rence a Day Makes in 1975 on Kudu Records.
In the 1980s Beck recorded several CD's for the DMP Digital Music Products label, including co-billed work with the noted flautist Ali Ryerson.
In 2000, he released a collaboration with Jimmy Bruno, Polarity
He played and recorded with numerous artists, including: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Gil Evans, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Paul Desmond, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Stan Getz, Ali Ryerson, Larry Coryell, Gene Ammons, Sergio Mendez, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dom Um Romão, Sabicas, Jimmy Bruno, Laura Nyro, Houston Person, Roger Kellaway, Richie Havens, Paul Simon, Joe Farrell, James Brown, David Sanborn and Gato Barbieri.

Jan Akkerman noemde dit trio ooit het best bewaarde geheim uit de Nederlandse musicscene,en ik ben het daar volledig mee eens.Ik heb het genoegen gehad de groep enkele malen ,,live,,in aktie gezien(o.a in Theater De Wegwijzer.)en elke keer was het een muzikaal feestje.

Preston Reed (fingerstyle and tapping guitarist.)

Een mooie interactie tussen de lezers van mijn blog.Een van deze lezers(JoGi.) vroeg in een reactie op een artikel over Albert Lee of ik iet in mijn verzameling had van gitarist Preston Reed.Hoewel ik wel van hem gehoord had ,heb ik niets van hem in mijn bezit.Maar...suprise!!!,mijn blogvriend uit het hoge noorden(Gerrit)had de reactie ook gelezen en nog geen dag later zat er een complete instructie video van Preston in mijn mailbox!Dat is nog eens samenwerking!Natuurlijk mijn gitaar gepakt om het eens te proberen ,maar daar ben ik maar mee gestopt.iets te hoog gegrepen voor mijn stramme vingertjes.Hieronder een fragment.




Preston Reed (born April 13, 1955, Armonk, New York) is an American fingerstyle and tapping guitarist.
Preston Reed learned guitar as a child on his father's guitar and, for a short time, classical guitar with a too-severe teacher. When he was 16 his interest was rekindled by Jorma Kaukonen's acoustic guitar-playing in Hot Tuna. He took the guitar again and began to compose his own songs in the style of Leo Kottke and John Fahey. His first public performance was at Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., in a concert with Allen Ginsberg. He continued recording and performing and signed his first major label record deal with MCA Records with the help of his friend Lyle Lovett.[1]

Reed has played with various other musicians, spanning the spectrum between Linda Ronstadt and rock band NRBQ. He was featured on American radio and TV broadcasts. Between 1979 and 2007, he recorded 15 albums on several labels - mostly solo acoustic guitar -, guest-starred on other musicians productions, founded his own Outer Bridge label and featured on two solo videos. He has been commissioned for film soundtracks and a suite of original music for the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet.

Howlin Wolf The Story

Howlin’ Wolf ranks among the most electrifying performers in blues history, as well as one of its greatest characters. He was a ferocious, full-bodied singer whose gruff, rasping vocals embodied the blues at its most unbridled. A large man who stood more than six feet tall and weighed nearly 300 pounds, Howlin’ Wolf cut an imposing figure, which he utilized to maximum effect when performing. In the words of blues historian Bob Santelli, “Wolf acted out his most potent blues, becoming the living embodiment of its most powerful forces.” Howlin’ Wolf cut his greatest work in the Fifties for the Chicago-based Chess Records. Many songs with which he is most closely identified - “Spoonful,” “Back Door Man,” “Little Red Rooster” and “I Ain’t Superstitious” - were written for him by bluesmen Willie Dixon, a fixture at Chess Records who also funneled material to Wolf’s main rival, Muddy Waters. Howlin’ Wolf himself was an estimable songwriter, responsible for such raw classics as “Killing Floor,” “Smokestack Lightning” and “Moanin’ at Midnight.”


Meet me In The Bottom
Howlin' Wolf defines the Blues while slamming Son House, then performs "Meet Me In The Bottom" with the help of his Band. It's not apparent What sets Wolf off, as Son House is off mic and inaudible, but I speculate that Son may have interrupted Wolf's oration with his own famous assessment of the Blues; "Ain't but one kind of Blues..., and that consists between male and female that's in love".

In 1910, Howlin’ Wolf was born on a Mississippi plantation in the midst of a blues tradition so vital it remains the underpinning for much of today’s popular music. His birth name was Chester Arthur Burnett; “Howlin’ Wolf” was a nickname he picked up in his youth. He was exposed to the blues from an early age through such performers as Charley Patton and Willie Brown, who performed at plantation picnics and juke joints. Wolf derived his trademark howl from the “blue yodel” of country singer Jimmie Rodgers, whom he admired. Although he sang the blues locally, it wasn’t until he moved to West Memphis in 1948 that he put together a full-time band. Producer Sam Phillips recorded Howlin’ Wolf at his Memphis Recording Service (later Sun Records) after hearing him perform on radio station KWEM. Some of the material was leased to Chess Records, and in the early Fifties Howlin’ Wolf signed with Chess and moved to Chicago. He remained there until his death.

How many More Years "Blues at Newport 1966,, Howlin' Wolf seems to enjoy the taste of His Harmonica maybe just a bit too much. This is a very good performance by a consummate Master of the Blues. Enjoy!

Howlin’ Wolf served to influence such blues-based rock musicians as the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. In fact, he recorded a pair of albums - The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions and London Revisited - with his British disciples in the early Seventies. Howlin’ Wolf’s distinctive vocal style and rough-hewn approach to the blues can also be heard in the work of such diverse artists as Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band and Led Zeppelin. Slowed down for much of the Seventies due to serious internal injuries suffered in an automobile accident, Howlin’ Wolf gave his last performance in Chicago in November 1975 with fellow blues titan B.B. King. He died of kidney failure two months later.

De twee eerste LP,s van Howlin Wolf verzamelt op een CD,mooier kan je het toch niet maken.Natuurlijk kennen we allemaal de versies van "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Red Rooster," "Spoonful," "Evil," "Wang Dang Doodle," "Back Door Man," enz, gespeeld door artiesten als Rolling Stones, Clapton, The Doors e.a.maar eigenlijk vind ik het in deze pure vorm toch het mooist.De combinatie van het ,,gehuil,, van de Wolf,de gitaar van Hubert Sumlin en de begeleiding Willie Dixon maken dit een van de mooiste bluesplaten uit mijn verzameling.

Townes Van Zandt Live at Club K4 Lubljana.Slovenie 28 Nov.1994

Je ben een wat sombere ,soms zelfs manisch/depressieve singer/songwriter en je ziet de club waar je die avond moet moet optreden(zie boven)tja,daar word je ook niet echt vrolijk van.Gelukkig voor Townes waren er zelf in Slovenie liefhebbers van zijn prachtige songs en werd het nog een mooie avond....

Die laatste keer dat Townes Van Zandt in Nederland speelde, was een regenachtige novemberavond in 1996. Diep verscholen in zijn versleten regenjas slenterde de getormenteerde zanger langs de grachten van de Utrechtse binnenstad. De lange schaduwen van zijn magere gestalte jaagden argeloze voorbijgangers de stuipen op het lijf. Een paar weken daarna, nadat hij zijn laatste optreden gaf in Londen, overleed deze zonderlinge verschijning op tweeënvijftigjarige leeftijd in het bijzijn van vrienden en familie, wat gezien zijn turbulente leven ironisch mag heten.


Goin,Down to Memphis

Net als zijn grootste idool, Hank Williams (1923-1953), stierf hij op een Nieuwjaarsdag. Al in 1978, nadat hij de langspeler Flying Shoes had uitgebracht, was hij al eens zomaar van de aardbodem verdwenen. De manisch-depressieve en toen nog door het grote publiek onbeminde troubadour uit Texas leek voorgoed uitgeput. Ditmaal zorgde de ongezonde levensstijl met teveel drank, drugs en een gokverslaving ervoor dat Townes zich als een kluizenaar terugtrok in een krot ergens in een armoedige buitenwijk van Nashville.

Toen hij een dikke tien jaar later terugkeerde met het album At My Window was zijn eerste vrouw gedood door zwervers en waren zijn oudere elpees nog steeds onvindbaar. Tijdens één van de vele optredens stapte Townes Van Zandt wel eens op een fan af, om te vragen of hij misschien wist waar zijn elpees nog te koop waren.


Katie Belle Blues

Veel later, in de jaren negentig, zwierf hij steeds vaker als een echte straatmuzikant door Europa en de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Soms landde hij op Schiphol met enkel een gitaarkoffer in zijn hand. Dan stapte hij zomaar in een trein. In één of ander boerengehucht in noorden van het land speelde hij dan voor twintig of dertig mensen. Drie uur later was hij alweer verdwenen, op weg naar een ander gehucht.

Townes Van Zandt (7 maart 1944, Fort Worth, Texas - 1 januari 1997, Smyrna, Tennessee)

In die laatste dagen van zijn leven was de gezondheid van Townes niet zo goed meer. Hoewel hij voor onvergetelijke en hypnotiserende optredens zorgde, stond hij ook vaak met bevende handen op het podium. Tussen de liedjes door vertelde hij steeds weer dezelfde flauwe grappen, zoals hij dat pakweg vijftien jaar geleden ook al deed. De jarenlange verslaving aan de godendrank eiste nu zijn tol. Het resulteerde regelmatig in onhandelbaar gedrag. J.T. Van Zandt, die regelmatig met zijn vader op tournee ging, vertelde in een interview dat Townes vlak voor zijn dood visioenen kreeg van engelen. Op het laatst waren die hallucinaties nog het enige dat hem staande hield op het podium.Je kunt het hitdossier er op na slaan, want terwijl mede-outlaws als Willie Nelson en Merle Haggard vette hits scoorden met zijn 'Pancho and Lefty', Emmylou Harris en Don Williams allebei veel succes hadden met zijn 'If I Needed You' en onder andere Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, Mudhoney, Lyle Lovett en Tindersticks eveneens zijn liedjes coverden, opereerde Townes Van Zandt vrijwel zijn gehele leven in volledige anonimiteit en obscuriteit.
