Woodrow Wilson (Woody) Guthrie (Okemah (Oklahoma), 14 juli 1912 - New York, 3 oktober 1967) was een productief en invloedrijk Amerikaans folkzanger, gitarist, banjo- en harmonicaspeler, die een schat aan onder meer liederen, folkgedichten en artikelen naliet. Bob Dylan was een groot bewonderaar van Woody wat mooi te zien is in de filmNo Direction Home (zeer aanbevolen!niet alleen voor Bob Dylanliefhebbers)

Mavis Staples- Nort Sea Jazz (July 9th. 2017)

Na de blanke soul van St.Paul & The Broken Bones (prachtig optreden),was het tijd voor de zwarte soul/gospel van Mavis Staples.Stonden St Paul en zijn band in die gigantische Nile,Mavis stond in de Congo geprogrammeerd ,een goede keus ,op deze lokatie kwam haar muziek het beste tot haar recht.Het publiek lag vanaf de eerste minuut aan haar voeten,opwarmen was niet nodig,het was bloedheet in de tent!

 Uiteraard veel werk van The Staples Singers ,maar ook mooie covers van o.a Buffalo Springfield ,Talking Heads,Bon Iver en The Band .Mavis Staples is een aardig eindje in de 70,heeft onlangs twee nieuwe heupen gekregen,maar gebruikt meermalen toch nog het hele podium.

En wat een band, onder leiding van Rick Holstrom .Ik zag deze uitstekend gitarist al eerder in aktie met Ros Piazza.Hij speelde ,en nam ook albums op met  Jimmy Rogers ,Billy Boy Arnold,Booker T,Jones en RL Burnside .Samen met Stephen Hodges (drums)Jeff Turmes(bass)  en Donny Gerrard en Vicki Randle (vocals)zorgden hij voor een prachtige ingetogen begeleiding van Mavis .Natuurlijk werd het optreden besloten met The Staple Singers klassieker I,ll Take You There.Ik verliet de tent op weg naar de Amazone ,voor wat later zou blijken, ook weer een hoogtepunt zou worden.Het geweldige optreden van Van Morrison  .

             

Van Morrison(feat. Candy Dulfer & Maceo Parker) - Muleskinner Blues (N.S.J. 9 July 2017)

     Het leek een doorsnee optreden van Van Morrison te worden deze avond ,maar hoe anders zou het worden. Een rustig begin met Too Late,Keep Me Singing,een mooi The Way Young Lovers Do,Foreing Window,Cleaning Window,Magic Time,en toen Moondance/My funny Valentine.Tot ieders verrassing kwam Candy Dulfer op het podium,en het concert kreeg een totaal ander wending.Baby Pleace Don,t Go met Maceo Parker on stage ,het werd steeds mooier!Muleskinner Blues,Early In the Morning,St James Infirmery,Help Me ,All In The Game,de nummers kregen door de inbreng van Candy en Maceo allemaal een extra lading.Toegift Gloria was het einde van een memorabel VM optreden..
Op sommige momenten deed het optreden denken aan de legendarische avonden  in Vredenburg......

The song was first recorded by Rodgers in 1930 and has been recorded by many artists since then, acquiring the de facto title "Mule Skinner Blues" after Rodgers named it "Blue Yodel #8" (one of his Blue Yodels).

Het was even uitblazen na het prachtige Van Morrison optreden.De heerlijke semi-akoestische set van Madeleine Peyroux was daar een uitgeproken gelegenheid voor.Het werd een mooi selectie uit het uitgebreide repertoire van Madeleine, in een muisstille en aandachtig luisterende zaal.

    Careless Love  Bijzondere (leuke) uitvoering van deze Bessie Smith klassieker.

De VM concerten zijn de laatste jaren behoorlijk voorspelbaar,natuurlijk de grote hits en als je geluk hebt af en toe een nieuw nummer.Ook de setlist van de avond tevoren in Soesdijk zag er weinig verrassend uit.

Deze avond was alles anders ,tijdens Moondance  verscheen Candy Dulfer op het podium,de song ging over op My Funny Valentine en Candy soleerde er lustig op los.Toen tijdens Baby Please   Don,t Go ook Maceo Parker op het toneel verscheen was het feest compleet..Een onvergetelijke avond,een van de beste VM concerten sinds jaren.Ik was niet van plan te filmen ,maar kon dit toch niet laten schieten,Beetje bibberig,maar een mooie herrinering

Jackson Brown - I,m Alive (2 Meter Sessies 18 Juni 1994)

     2 Meter Sessies is een Nederlands muzikaal radio- en televisieprogramma, gepresenteerd door Jan Douwe Kroeske. In deze show wordt sinds 1987 bekende en nieuwe artiesten de mogelijkheid geboden om in een studio-omgeving een inkijk in hun liedjes te geven en deze regelmatig tot een akoestische basis terug te brengen. Gezien het startjaar van de show is 2 Meter Sessies in dit aspect een voorloper op het later populaire tv-programma MTV Unplugged.Op een oude HD kwam ik nog een paar mooie opname,s tegen ,waaronder deze van Jackson Brown.

I'm Alive is the tenth album by American singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, released in 1993 (see 1993 in music). The title track, "I'm Alive", reached #18 on the Album Rock Tracks chart and #28 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Other singles released from the album were "Everywhere I Go" (UK #67 and "Sky Blue and Black".

"The Shape I'm In" is a song by The Band, first released on their 1970 album Stage Fright. It was written by Robbie Robertson, who did little to disguise the fact that the song's sense of dread and dissolution was about Richard Manuel, the song's principal singer. It became a regular feature in their concert repertoire, appearing on their live albums Rock of Ages, Before the Flood, and The Last Waltz. Author Neil Minturn described the song as "straightforward rock." Along with "The Weight," it is one of the Band's songs most performed by other artists. It has been recorded by Bo Diddley, The Good Brothers, The Mekons, The Pointer Sisters, She & Him, and Marty Stuart.

Aretha Franklin - Don,t Play That Song (You Lied) (Cliff Richard Show 1970)

    "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" is a song written by Ahmet Ertegün and by the wife of Ben E. King, Betty Nelson. It was first recorded by soul singer Ben E. King. The title track on King's third album Don't Play That Song!, it reached number 2 on the U.S. R&B singles chart and number 11 on the pop chart when released as a single on Atco Records in 1962.

             
Aretha Franklin covered the song for her twenty-first album, Spirit in the Dark, released on Atlantic Records. Her version, performed with the Dixie Flyers, was released as a single in 1970 (see 1970 in music) and peaked at number 1 for five weeks on the R&B singles chart and number 11 on the pop chart.^[1] Franklin's version was certified gold with sales over a million copies. It reached number 13 on the UK Singles Chart. This was the first of two covers Franklin did of songs made popular by King. The other was her cover of "Spanish Harlem" in 1971.
