 Henry Saint Clair Fredericks (born May 17, 1942), who uses the stage name Taj Mahal, is an American blues musician. He often incorporates elements of world music into his works. A self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, piano, banjo and harmonica (among many other instruments), Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his almost 50-year career by fusing it with nontraditional forms, including sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.

Een mooie zomeravond in een zeer druk Antwerpen.Doel van het bezoek de mooie concertzaal (voorheen filmzaal) De Roma.Ik kom daar graag zag daar al mooie optredens o.a The Waterboys ,goed geluid en prima sfeer.
 Doel van de reis was deze keer het optreden het Taj Mahal Trio.Paar jaar geleden zag ik ze al in actie in De Handelbeurs in Gent ,een prima optreden en voldoende redenen voor een herhaling.

De jaren gaan tellen, ook bij Taj Mahal.Beweegt moeizaam en sinds zijn optreden in De Handelsbeurs een paar jaar geleden ook een kilootje of 10 aangekomen zo te zien.Ook zijn gitaarspel viel niet altijd mee ,natuurlijk de herkenbare klanken maar zat er af en toe toch ook behoorlijk naast.Gelukkig heeft zijn stem nog weinig aan kracht ingeboet.Wat volgende was voor mij toch behoorlijk optreden ,al waren achteraf de meningen hierover verdeelt.

Een optreden van Taj Mahal is een mix van  deltablues, countryblues, soulblues, reggae en carribian music. Het is ook goed te horen waar Ry Cooder door geinspereerd is ,of is het andersom?
Ook over het geluid deze avond kan gediscusseerd worden,de bas stond wat hard in de mix,dat zou in zaal ,zeker in deze akoestische setting ,beter  kunnen.

Ik herkende niet alle songs maar ik hoorde o.a CC Rider,Good Morning, Miss Brown(op dobro),Going Up To The Country, Paint My MailBox Blue,Honey Bee,Zanzibar(dacht ik),‘Blues With A Feeling(op piano),‘Sitting On Top Of The World,TV Mama,De toegift was She Caught The Katy (And Left Me A Mule T Ride)

De begeleiding werd gevormd door  Bill Rich op bass en Kester Smith op drums.
Het was zeker niet het beste concert van het jaar ,maar had toch een zeer aangename avond

It was “You Must Unload,” originally recorded by Blind Alfred Reed in 1927, during the Bristol Sessions, a watershed moment for country music. The Roadburn festival is an annual event in Tilburg with music such as Stoner Rock, Doom Metal, Black Metal and others, not the kind of music where you might expect me. At the invitation of the kids (real enthusiasts) I tried it last year, it was I liked it so much that I couldn't turn down the invitation this time either. There is a great atmosphere, audiences from all over the world, and there is plenty to enjoy for a music lover like me. I saw a converted church in one of the outbuildings. three great performances in a row, including the band below.

 I felt like I was back in the 70s, this band played in the tradition of Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, Trees, Pentangle, etc. Very nice performance by this band, unknown to me, in an atmospheric packed hall.

Birds Of Chicago - De Kloveniersdoelen ,Middelburg (Holland) April 26th 2016

Zo,n drie jaar geleden maakte ik voor het eerst kennis met Birds of Chicago,toen ze optraden in het prachtige theater De Wegwijzer.Toen in een min of meer accoustische setting,deze avond meer versterk met el.gitaar,bas en keyboards.Vooral de invulling door de gitarist beviel me prima.

 Birds of Chicago zijn Allison Russel en JT Nero.Opgerichtt in 2012 toen JT Nero songs begon te schrijven voor Allison.Allebei hadden ze hun eigen bands Russell met Po,Girl en Nero met JT and the Clouds. Tijden het optreden van de Birds blijkt telkens weer dat hun stemmen perfect bij elkaar passen ,de wat ruwe stem van JT en de prachtige vocalen van Allisson.

Allison Russel is een kind van Schotse moeder ,en haar vader kwam (dacht ik) uit Trinidad.Zij heeft hem pas op latere leeftijd leren kennen,zij droeg dit nummer op aan hem.

Het optreden vond plaats op een prachtige locatie De Kloveniersdoelen De Doelen was de oefenruimte (doelen) van de Kloveniers (schuttersleden die met de bus schoten). In de Franse tijd was het een militair hospitaal.Er is een mooie ruimte ingericht,ideaal voor dit soort concerten..Het publiek zit dicht op het podium zodat je idee krijgt een soort huiskamerconcert.

De mooie avond werd afgesloten met een ingetogen eerbetoon aan de vorige week overleden Prince.

Het was de afsluiting van een prachtige muzikale avond.Allison en JT Nero zijn nooit te beroerd voor een praatje achteraf en natuurlijk ging het laatste album"Real Midnight" mee naar huis.

Een regenachtige avond in St-Niklaas,en niet bepaald het gezelligste stadje van Belgie. Concertzaal De Casino daarentegen mocht er zijn,mooi sfeervolle knusse zaal,met prachtig licht en mooi geluid.
(al je zou het aan de filmpjes niet zeggen,maar ik stond iets te dicht bij de boxen met mijn toestelletje)

Het werd een mooie show ,Dave Alvin houd de boel met de uitstekend band aan de gang ,broertje Phil heeft het duidelijk moeilijk.Het gitaarspelen gaat moeizaam en beweegt moeilijk ,maar zijn stem is nog prima in orde.Maar desalniettemin was de aftrap met:

INTO THE MYSTIC

"Into the Mystic" is voor mij een van de mooiste Van Morrison nummers .Het staat op zijn album Moondance uit 1970 en ook op een van de beste Live Albums die ik ken It's Too Late To Stop Now.
Het nummer is een inspiratiebron voor veel artiesten en ik heb het dan ook al vele malen door anderen zien uitvoeren.Hier volgen een paar voorbeelden.

Gov,t Mule. WarrenHaynes en zijn maten zijn in staat om prachtige rockklassiekers te coveren.
Van Led Zeppelin tot Frank Zappa,Black Sabbath of The Beatles ,ze doen het allemaal,ik heb het met eigen ogen gezien.
Natuurlijk mag ook Van Morrison niet ontbreken,vandaar dit prachtige Into the Mystic

Ook bij haar werd net als bij Jacob thuis waarschijnlijk veel naar Van Morrison geluisterd.

Glen Hansard,de geweldige zanger van The Frames is in zijn jeugd vooral beinvloed door Leonard Cohen,Bob Dylan en uiteraard Van Morrison
Tegenwoordig treed hij op met de Tsjechise paniste/zangeres Marketa Irglova en uiteraard staat Into the Mystic op het repetoire.


Levon Helm treed tegenwoordig op met zijn eigen ,,Band,,
Hier met de legendarische singer /songwriter Phoebe Snow


Natuurlijk komt Van the Man zelf ook nog aan de beurt.
Mooie opname met o.a Brian Kennedy.Into the Mystic staat nog regelmatig op de setlist van Van
dus wie weet op 10 okt.in de H.M.H.

RED HOUSE (JIMI HENDRIX)

"Red House" comes from Jimi Hendrix's first album "Are You Experienced" I can still remember where and when I first heard the record. Friend Andre had bought it. His father had a beautiful pick-up, and we were happy with it for days. It must have been 1967. Red House was one of my favorite songs, not just mine, it would be covered many times over by thousands of bands. Strangely enough, the song was not on the US pressing of the LP. The record executives' argument was "America does not like blues"

 Kai Strauss heb ik al dikwijls in actie gezien met Memo Gonzalez & The Bluescasters .Na 15 jaar met deze band gespeeld te hebben vond hij het tijd voor een eigen band ,en hiermee stond hij deze avond op het zeer geslaagde bluesfestival van Ridderkerk. Hij heeft een paar prima muzikanten om zich heen verzamelt,o.a de sax/harmonica speler beviel mij erg goed.Het optreden stond als een huis en heb er van genoten
En aan de reacties van het publiek te horen was ik niet de enige.
