The Band - Long Black Veil (31 Dec. 1983)

San Francisco Civic Auditorium (San Francisco, CA) Een van mijn favoriete "The Band"nummers.Had het al eerder op mijn blog,maar deze uitvoering is toch ook weer erg mooi(ondanks de piep halverwege)

"Long Black Veil" is a 1959 country ballad, written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell. A saga song, "Long Black Veil" is told from the point of view of an executed man falsely accused of murder. He refuses to provide an alibi, since on the night of the murder he was having an affair with his best friend's wife, and would rather die and take their secret to his grave than admit the truth. The chorus describes the woman's mourning visits to his gravesite, wearing a long black veil and enduring a wailing wind.(Wikipedia)

Brainbox - Downman / Woman,s Gone (1969)

Sensationele eerste single van deze band."Down Man" verried al meteen het enorme potentieel van de groep met hun progressieve bluesstijl en vooral het karakteristieke, hoge stemgeluid van Kaz Lux. Bovendien bleken Lux en Akkerman in staat tot het schrijven van origineel materiaal, terwijl de covers opvielen door de verrassende interpretatie.

 Ik geloof niet dat ik de band in deze samenstelling "live" heb zien optreden,wel de latere bezettingen met o.a Rudy De Queljoe en John Schuursma

Cuby & The Blizzards - Appleknockers Flophouse

Mede dankzij mijn muziekvriend uit het hoge noorden (Gerrit) maar weer eens aandacht voor een van de beste Nederlandse bluesbands aller tijden.Harry en Herman zijn dood maar hun muziek leeft voort!

Het nummer Appleknockers Flophouse betekende toch wel een muzikale trendbreuk.van blues meer naar bluesrock,en ik weet nog wel dat ik daar toen aan moest wennen. Toch een ijzersterk nummer ,maar was wel een van de laatste hoogtepunten van de band.Ik kwam er laatst achter dat het nummer ook in de tegenwoordige (hard)rock scene nog steeds gewaardeerd word.

In 2005 deden de mannen een sessie in een boerderij te Grolloo waar de legendarische Cuby plaat Groeten uit Grollo destijds in 1967 is opgenomen. Erwin Java vervangt Eelco Gelling

Summertime In England - Live At The Beacon Theater 30 November 1989

 Een van de vele hoogtepunten van die prachtige Van Morrison DVD The Concert.Ik heb nummer het vele malen live uitgevoerd zien worden (o.a in Vredenburg,Utrecht),maar dit is toch wel een van de mooiste.Een geweldige band met in dit nummer hoofdrollen voor Richie Buckley,Bernie Holland en Georgie Fame. De Band: Georgie Fame-Organ,BackingVocals,Bernie Holland - Electric/acoustic guitars,Brian Odgers-Bass,Neil Drinkwater - Keys/accordion,Dave Early-Drums, Richie Buckley - Sax/vocals,Steve Gregory - sax/flute.

Van Morrison quoted as saying, "['Summertime in England'] was actually part of a poem I was writing, and the poem and the song sorta merged... I'd read several articles about this particular group of poets who were writing about this particular thing, which I couldn't find in the framework I was in.

 Haar album "Postcart From Dowtown"behoort al jaren tot een van de favorieten in mijn verzameling.
4 December geeft deze dame dame een optreden in de mooie Zeeuwse Concertzaal in Middelburg.
De tickets liggen al gereed.

"Every Day I Have the Blues" is a blues song that has been performed in a variety of styles. An early version of the song is attributed to Pinetop Sparks and his brother Milton or Marion. It was first performed in the taverns of St. Louis by the Sparks brothers and was recorded July 28, 1935 by Pinetop with Henry Townsend on guitar. The song is a twelve-bar blues that features Pinetop's piano and falsetto vocal. The opening verse includes the line "Every day, every day I have the blues". After a reworking of the song by Memphis Slim in 1949, it became a blues standard with renditions recorded by numerous artists.[5] Four different versions of "Every Day I Have the Blues" have reached the Top Ten of the Billboard R&B chart and two—one by the Count Basie Orchestra with Joe Williams and one by B.B. King—have received Grammy Hall of Fame Awards.

Laurence Jones - De Viersprong (8 Nov.2014)

Net bekomen van het prachtige optreden van Samantha Fish & Mike Zito in De Viersprong vorige week (zie mijn blog)moesten we deze avond alweer opdraven voor een optreden van Laurence Jones,en dat was geen straf!Zijn naam waarde al een poosje rond het "blues" circuit,goeie berichten en hij maakte het volledig waar.Geweldig gitaarwerk,prima stem en bovendien twee uitstekende begeleiders.Deze mannen gaan we volgende zomer waarschijnlijk op de grote festivals tegenkomen.

We zagen al veel aanstormende talenten in De Viersprong o.a Danny Bryant ,Hamilton Loomis  ,The Brew,Ian Parker e.a Dit is er ook weer zo een waar we nog veel van zullen horen........

Laurence kent zijn klassiekers ..........................

 Vier jaar geleden werd bij  Laurence Jones de ziekte van Crohn geconstateerd .Die aandoening vergt natuurlijk de nodige aanpassingen in zijn leven ,maar ook deze avond blijkt ,mede door zijn positieve instelling en zijn muzikaliteit hij niet van plan is zijn carriere hierdoor te laten beinvloeden.

                                          Whisper in the wind 

Veel up-tempo nummers maar ook een paar prachtige ballads waaronder dit "Whisper in the Wind"opgedragen aan zijn pas overleden oom. 

Het optreden deed me soms erg aan de jonge Rory Gallagher denken ,die ik ook op ong.deze leeftijd al in aktie zag.Dat werd des te meer bevestigd door het slotnummer Bullfrog Blues,een prachtig einde van een mooi muzikaal feestje ,met dank aan Laurence Jones en zijn band en natuurlijk de organisatie!!!!
