Gisteravond naar het jaarlijkse bluesfestival bij de ,,buren,,in Kwadendamme.
Naast de bekende namen The Radio Kings,The Nighthawks,The NimmoBrothers ook deze zeer talentvolle jongedame,wat mij betreft de verrassing van de avond.

Wat een prachtig concert afgelopen Vrijdag in Bergen op Zoom.
Storyteller Chip Taylor,voormalig Van Morrison gitarist John Platania en rising star Kendell Carson stonden in een matig gevulde theater de Maagd op het podium.De wegblijvers hebben veel gemist .De hoofdrol was natuurlijk voor Chip ,veel nummers van zijn laatste album Yonkers begeleid door subtiel gitaarspel van John en viool ,en zang van Kendell.Natuurlijk kwamen er een paar nummers van Kendell Carson,s laatste album aan bod maar het mooiste werd voor het laatst bewaard,prachtige uivoeringen van de Chip Taylornummers,Wild Thing( John ging even los)een huiveringwekkend mooi Angel of the Morning en op verzoek uit de zaal America Black en Bleu ,bijna fluisterd gezongen ,in een muisstille zaal,een van mijn favoriete Chip Taylor nummers.
Ik had na afloop graag nog een praatje met John Platania gemaakt(bv over zijn Van Morrison ervaringen)maar die liet zich in tegenstelling tot Chip en Kendell niet meer zien.Maar met die twee en nog enkele fans werd het toch nog gezellig.

Chip Taylor (born March 21, 1944, in Yonkers, New York) is zijn artistennaam.
Hij is geboren onder de naam James Wesley Voight,is de broer van filmacteur Jonathan "Jon" Voight en geoloog Barry Voight. Hij is de oom Angelina Jolie en acteur James Haven.

John Platania is geboren in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley, in Ulster County, vlakbij Woodstock.John is het meest bekend geworden door zijn werk met Van Morrison, het begon met Moondance, laatst speelde hij ook nog mee op Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl uit 2009. In 1973 toerde Platania met Morrison als lid van zijn band The Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Het dubbel live album It's Too Late to Stop Now kwam uit in 1974 met song van deze toer. Platania schreef twee songs samen met Van die staan op het album The Philosopher's Stone,terwijl hij ook op verschillende tracks gitaar speelt. Verder werkte hij met Randy Newman,Bonny Raitt,Judy Collins,Don Mclean,Nathalie Merchant en vele anderen.

Kendell Carson geboren Canada studeerde viool en werd al snel lid van het National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Op 9 jarige leeftijd speelde ze met de BC Fiddle Orchestra, deze ervaring kon ze goed gebruiken voor optredens met o.a the Paperboys, Outlaw Social, en Kid Carson (haar broer) en Chip Taylor
Ze heeft twee solo albums op haar naam staan Allright Dynamite(2009) en Rearvieuw River Tears(2007)

Charlie Musselwhite (Repost)

Charlie Musselwhite (geboren op 31 januari 1944 in Kosciusko, Mississippi) is een Amerikaanse blues-harp-speler en bandleider, een van de blanke bluesmannen die in de vroege jaren 60 samen met Mike bloomfield en Paul Butterfield erg populair was.Hoewel hij vaak word beschouwd als een "witte bluesman" noemt hij zichzelf Native American en een afstammeling van de Choctaw een indianenstam uit die regio.


In zijn familie was het normaal om muziek te spelen, zijn vader speelde gitaar en harmonica, zijn moeder op de piano, en een familielid had een one-man band. Als teenager experienteerde Charlie met rockabilly , western swing , electric blues , en vormen van African Americaanse muziek De opkomst van legendarische figuren als o.a Elvis Presley , Jerry Lee Lewis , en Johnny Cash ,waren natuurlijk van grote invloed op
Charlie .Hij onderhield zichzelf in die tijd met het graven van sloten en storten van beton. Echter ook in deze omgeving was muziekmaken voor Charlie het belangrijkste ,hij creeerde voor zichzelf de bijnaam "Memphis Charlie."

In Chicago leert hij artiesten als Lew Soloff, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson, Buddy Guy, Howlin 'Wolf, Little Walter, en Big Walter Horton kennen. Musselwhite dompelt zich compleet onder in het muzikale leven .speelt overal waar hij kan.Hij leert John Lee Hooker kennen en de twee blijven hun hele leven beste vrienden. Ondertussen word Charlie Musselwhite steeds bekender in Chicago
In de tijd leidde Musselwhite zijn eigen blues-band en had met het album en Stand Back! in 1966 veel succes Hij vertrok naar San Fransisco was een van de leidende figuren in de bluesmusicscene Hij overtuigd John Lee Hooker ook om naar san Fransisco te komen.

Sindsdien heeftMusselwhite heeft meer dan 20 albums opgenomen,en speelde op vele albums zoals Bonnie Raitt's Longing in hun hart en The Blind Boys Alabama winnaars van de Grammy Awards. Hij deed mee op Tom Waits ' Mule Variations and INXS ' Suicide Blonde . Hij is ook vermeld op Tom Waits' Mule Variations en INXS 'Suicide Blonde. Zelf won hij WC Handy Awards en zes Grammy nominaties, alsmede de Lifetime Achievement Awards van het Monterey Blues Festival en de San Javier Jazz Festival in San Javier, Spanje en de Mississippi President's Award for Excellence in the Arts.

In de loop der jaren maakt Musselwhite een zijsprong naar wat andere muziek,op zijn album Continental Drifter werk hij samen met Quarteto Patria , uit Cuba's Santiago regio,vergelijkbaar met de muziek uit de Mississippi Delta .



Zijn laatste twee albums, Sanctuary en Delta Hardware, zijn beide uitgekomen op Real World Records.

Hoeveel keer zouden er nummers van Bob Dylan gecoverd zijn,ik denk dat het er ontelbaar zijn.The Byrds waren een van de eersten,maar ook de huidige generatie weet de oude meester te waarderen Onlangs kwam ik deze versie van ,,Just Like Tom Thumb,s Blues ,,tegen.Heel erg apart maar ook heel mooi!

"Cold Sweat" is een song uitgevoerd door James Brown.,maar let op! geschreven door zijn toenmalige bandleider Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis. En dezelfde ,,Pee Wee,, kennen we natuurlijk uit de Van Morrison Band waar hij lange tijd deel van uitmaakte.Brown nam het op in Mei 1967.De single "Cold Sweat" op King Records was een nr.1 R&B hit, en haalde een 7e plaats op de Hitparade .Een complete 7 minuten lange versie staat op het James Brown album Cold Sweat.
Van speelde het nummer 24 keer live in de periode 1991/1999

Neil Young Old Man/It,s a Dream 1971/2005

Als afsluiter van de Neil Young week twee mooie opnames van Neil,een uit 1971 en een uit 2005.Ze geven een mooi beeld van de man zijn muzikale leven.Vanaf Buffalo Springfield tot op heden ,altijd muziek van hoog niveau.Soms keihard,soms erg zacht,soms erg verrassend.Zijn live optredens zijn het aanzien altijd meer dan waard,kortom ,van mij mag hij nog een poosje doorgaan.Er staat ook weer een nieuw album op stapel met Daniel Lanois als producer,als dat maar goedkomt.Persoonlijk ben ik niet zo gescharmeerd van Daniel als producer(wel als muzikant).

In het kader van de Neil Young week gaan we zo,n 36 jaar terug. Plaats van handeling, het Wembley Stadion in London gevuld met zo,n 80000 toeschouwers.
Jesse Colin Young,Joni Mitchell en The Band verzorgden het voorprogramma maar de hoofdact was natuurlijk Crosby ,Stills,Nash & Young.

Het is rustig romd om ,,The Old Grey Cat,van een nieuw album is mij niets bekend,wel weet ik dat hij in Mei gaat toeren in de States(solo).Wie weet steekt hij in het najaar de grote plas over,van mij mag hij.Zolang kan ik niet wachten dus daarom maak ik er maar een Neil Young week van.We beginnen met zijn optreden in Torhout 1993 samen met Booker T &The MG,s De avond van tevoren was ik er getuige van dat hij de Ahoy op zijn kop zette.Een geweldig concert Booker T en Neil bleken een geweldige combinatie te zijn,hoogtepunten een prachtige uitvoering van All Along The Watchtower(Neil en Arthur volledig uit hun dak)en een heel bijzondere Dock of the Bay.

Dusty Springfield - The Motown Revue UK Tour 1965

These recordings are from a TV Special with Dusty Springfield, recorded at the Rediffusion TV Studios in London on March 18, 1965. Many big Motown names such as The Miracles, the Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye were present.

Dusty Springfield presented the weekly TV Pop show Ready Steady Go (with the opening line..The Weekend Starts Here) And since she was a big fan of Motown, this was a great opportunity to present this music to a larger audience.


Wishin and Hopin met Martha & the Vandellas

The subsequent tour through England, however, was not a success, the country was still completely under the spell of groups such as The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, etc. The Motown artists were still relatively unknown and therefore received little airplay on the radio stations. The result was poor ticket sales and performances in half-full halls.

Dusty Springfield Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien (Hampstead (London), April 16, 1939 – Henley-on-Thames (Oxfordshire), March 2, 1999) Springfield started the trio The Springfields in the early 1960s with her brother and another boy. A well-known hit of theirs was Little Boy from 1962. Other songs were Silver Threads and Golden Needles and Island of Dreams. The trio split up in 1964 and she started her solo career. Springfield was one of the most popular British singers of the sixties with no fewer than seventeen hits. With You don't have to say you love me she reached first place in the English hit parade in 1966. Her album 'Dusty in Memphis' is considered a pop classic, especially because of her beautiful soul-influenced voice. After 1970 her popularity ended. In 1974, the song 'Summer is over' from 1964 became a minor hit because Radio Veronica used it in the campaigns to preserve this offshore station. In 1987 she made a short-lived comeback under the tutelage of the Pet Shop Boys, which lasted several years. Dusty Springfield died at the age of 59 from breast cancer. Despite this, her influence is still very great on current British blue-eyed soul singers, such as Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Joss Stone

Rythm Angels 29Ways

Net als veel andere singer/songwriters schreven Rebecca Folsom en Celeste Krenz veel songs voor andere artiesten.Beide hadden verschillende startpunten (Folsom komt uit Colorado, Krenz uit North Dakota),maar ze eindigden in Nashville .Tijdens een gezamelijk optreden bleken hun stemmen prima bij elkaar te passen en besloten ze als duo verder te gaan.Wat mij betreft een goede beslissing
